Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those who switched formulas...

What made you decide to switch to Gentlease or Similac Sensitive type formulas? How much gas is too much gas for a baby? My baby is farting A LOT and lets out huge burps when eating. She also has episodes of grunting and high pitched squeals. I asked my pediatrician and she said it was too early to decide if she needs a different formula (baby is 4 weeks tomorrow) but my baby looks uncomfortable.

Re: For those who switched formulas...

  • Well I BF and give formula but our Pedi told us to switch to Gentlease at his 2 week Appt. LO always seemed to be in pain from the gas which is why we switched it. Gas is normal for babies and so is burping and grunting but you are the mother, if your instincts are telling you something isn't right then switch it, you don't need your docs permission to do that. Also the only thing you want to be careful of is switching formula too much. You have to give it at least a few weeks to see if it gets better and I think 4 weeks is sufficient.

  • We were switched to Similac Sensitive Saturday morning per our Pedi's advice. Peyton was having hard stools, and was spitting up after every feeding. She was originally on Soy formula, but it was making her extremely constipated. If you think the formula is whats wrong, I would switch. Just make sure not to switch to much as PP said. Our pedi told us to give the formula switch at least 4 days before we would notice a difference. But, we noticed a difference the next day as her stools were back to normal and she stopped spitting up so much. *Pedi said the spit up had a lot to do with the constipation.*

  • We started with Similac Advance at the hospital and switched to Target's version when we got home. Within a week or so DS would grunt, pull his knees up really high to push, turn beet red from straining, and scream/cry when trying to poop... and then he would poop out little hard nuggets. We immediately switched back to Similac Advance. We did it cold turkey.

DS did better on the name brand, but his poop was still hard-ish. He wasn't straining anymore, but it just wasn't right. I waited about a week to see if he just needed some time and when there was no improvement I called the doctor. They said to go ahead and try the Similac Sensitive. I had a sample at home, so we switched cold turkey again.

Within the first feeding, he was much better. Within a full day of using the Sensitive, all issues were gone... as was his backed up poop. Tongue Tied

  • We switched from Similac Advanced to the Sensitive because baby was spitting up a lot and only eating 12 or so ounces a day.  Once we switched, he started eating normally and not spitting up.  He still farts like a champ though and needs to be burped a lot.  I'm thinking he may have reflux, but I'm hoping that's not the case.  He might just be gassy like his daddy.

I wouldn't consider gas reason enough to switch. If he is in pain, not gaining well, or having constipation or diarrhea, it's worth a shot. We changed C to Similac Sensitive RTF at 1 month from Similac Advance powder because of his reflux. The RTF is easier on his stomach and the Sensitive versions are lower in lactose.
  • We started DD on reflux meds early due to lots of spitting up and she seemed really uncomfortable.  I had a check for any Similac so when they were on sale, I bought a bottle of RTF Similac Sensitive.  DD hadn't ever eaten more than 3oz/feeding (at 2months...) and her second bottle of Sensitive took 4.5 oz.  Next she took 5oz, with much less discomfort and spitting up.  Since she wasn't gaining well, pedi wrote RX for Sensitive with diagnosis of difficulty feeding and health insurance pays for her formula...

  • LO is on similac sensitive and has regular daily poops.  She was on Target version and was very constipated.  In past tried similac soy, nutramigen, enfamily AR powder and ready formula and she still excessively spit up.  Since LO still gaining weight and not in pain, we put her on sensitive since that made her the most regular in her stools.
