So, I think my kid is PTing himself. That, or we owe DCP a huuuuuge bonus. She got him over the initial hurdle of figuring out what to do on the potty and he got pretty good at going whenever we sat him on it (usually just before bath/bedtime). After a little hiatus where he flat out refused to use it for a month, he's recently started asking to go. Yesterday he went four times. Of course, we still had plenty of diapers to change, but this seems like a really good start. And he gets annoyed when we put his diaper on. He grabs at it and whines "pee pee potty!".
Anyway, back to my question. The next time we have a quiet weekend at home (which won't be for awhile, unfortunately), I'd like to give the PTing thing a real try. What are training pants? Are they useful? I'm imagining that they are just thicker than regular undies, in case of accidents? Or should we go straight to undies? We will probably avoid Pull Ups, since we mostly use cloth now (maybe why he seems to be PTing himself? Who knows.).
Any brands to rec or things to keep in mind?
TIA. We have been pretty lax about the whole thing and I'm not expecting much, but I figured that since he is showing initiative, we should be prepared.
Re: Training pants vs. undies and other PTing stuff
I'd go straight to regular underwear, any brand will do b/c he'll outgrow it soon anyway. Maybe have him pick it out w/ cars or trucks or whatever he likes.
good luck!!
Training pants are just thick underwear. It helps cut back on cleanups and then you can use 'real' underwear as a the treat for going potty consistently.
We used pull ups for a while at nap time and nighttime, but if it is just as easy for you to use cloth diapers at that time until he is trained for that then I would see no need for pull ups. Maggie was older so she knew pull ups were for big kids and wanted to use them. However once she was actually trained she never actually used the pull ups at night or nap time, they were more for my own piece of mind until I was sure there weren;t going to be lots of bedtime accidents.
I would definitely give it a try and see how it goes. For us Maggie always seemed ready - asking to go - but she never actually went when she was on the potty. We followed our pedi's advice to give it a try every few months and if it doesn;t work out then lay off for a few months and try again later. It worked out wonderfully for Maggie (which probably mean sMolly is a PT'ing disaster in training) - once we did it at about 2yrs 9mo she was totally trained. Like I said she never went in her pull up for naptime or overnight. She was poop trained the next week and she has had less than 5 accidents since the first morning she started going in the potty. I would rather wait and have less accidents than have pushed her when she was younger and ended up with accidents all the time.
I just went/am going through the PTing process. I've been pretty relaxed about it and it seems to work. I purchased thick cotton underware (training pants) from Gerber. They're just like underwear, but have a thicker piece of cotton in the middle. This is VERY helpful in reducing the amount of clean up required. The first day we had a few accidents, but then DD got the hang of it and it's been few and far between. We're going on week three and I switch off/on between normal cotton underware and the thicker training underware.
GL...I was second guessing if LO was ready on the first day, but the second day was much easier.
We're attempting to potty train now and are also using the Gerber training pants. FYI, you may want to get the solid colors if you go this route--DS throws a temper tantrum if I try to put him in the pants with cars and trucks because he thinks they are "baby underwear."
