Does anyone have any insight or information on older felines and hyperthyroidism? My 16 almost 17 year old kitty Pumpkin has been obviously off for a bit so we took her to the vet last week. She had bloodwork, a urinalysis amd urine culture done. So far everything looks fine except her urine is highly diluted, thus the culture. The vet now wants another test on the remaining blood for hyperthyroidism. I guess my selfish question is has anyone dealt with this and can tell me what it all entails? I don't want her to suffer, but I don't want to put her through the ringer of treatment when she is so old. Is that selfish or what? I hate myself for thinking like this, but would it be better for her to live a few more years with treatment or consider putting her down so she doesn't have to deal with it? I am awaiting a call from the vet to get more info but this is all stewing and bothering me...my poor kitty.
Re: NBR: MSTie24 or Anyone who knows anything about older feline diseases
I haven't personally dealt with this so I'm glad tobykitty has some ideas! (Not glad you've had to deal with it, tk, of course.) Cats Exclusive is a great vet, and they really know their stuff. I would definitely not throw in the towel, it is very manageable and there's no reason why she can't live many more years. Sorry you're dealing with that, though, I'm sure that must be stressful. ((hugs))
