Isaac's Birth Story & PIP (Long)

As I posted last week, Isaac was born on 7/6 at 10:56am. Here's his birth story. It's long, i just copied it from my blog. eta: he was 7 lb 14 oz & 20.25 in

I was scheduled for an induction at 41 weeks. We arrived at the hospital the check in at 5:15am. We went to the front desk and were checked in and taken to our L&D room by around 6am. Our L&D nurse came in at 6:30am and hooked up my IV and started the pitocin drip around 6:45 am. She said it would at least 45 minutes for the first pitocin to even reach my veins, but she wanted to get it started because my doctor was coming in early to try to break my water.

At 7am my doc arrived to discuss how the day would go and to try to break my water. At this point I was 3cm dilated, the same as I'd been at my appointment the week before.

By 10am my contractions were 2 minutes apart and getting pretty painful to tolerate. Luckily, my nurse was a huge advocate of me getting my epidural before the other 5 ladies waiting.

The epidural was in place by 10:20 am and I was now 5.5 cm. At 10:35am a student nurse came in to place my catheter. Once it was placed Isaac's heartrate  dropped significantly on the monitors. They immediately had me lay on my side, put oxygen on me and called in my nurse. My nursed checked me to see what was going on and we were all amazed to hear that I was now 10 cm dilated and ready to push!

My nurse started frantically calling my doctor to come back over and ordering people to set up the room. At one point I even heard her call the on call hospital doctor to make sure he was around in case my doctor couldn't get from her office across the street in time.

Luckily, my doctor arrived about 10 minutes later. They didn't even have time to get the table set up for delivery. She took a look and said, ok, whenever you're ready to push, just go. One push later at 10:56am, Isaac was born!

It turns out the reason his heart rate dropped so much was that he had a "true knot" in his umbilical cord. I had no idea how rare or possibly serious this could be until a google search on it today. Apparently it occurs in only 1% of pregnancies and is just caused by fetal movements early on when they are small enough to move around. And as much as Isaac moved around I'm really not too surprised he was able to swim himself into a knot. My google search also told me true knots are reported to lead to a 4-fold increase in fetal loss because they can compress the cord vessels when they tighten. So, thank God Isaac got out of there quickly and safely!

We are at home and doing well. Breastfeeding is going well and doesn't hurt nearly as bad as it did last time. Big sister is so excited about her baby brother and is always laying on him, poking him in the face and waking him up. :)

Here are a couple pictures of our first days at home.
