I don't normally post here but I?m freaking out and my husband doesn't seem to understand why. I'm wondering if I can get some advice from some of you wonderful women.
I went for my appointment today and I?m measuring small. The doctor said it might just be that she was laying funny but he wanted me to go for an ultrasound. I have one scheduled for Wednesday AM but I just don't know what it all means. I was looking into some research and it said that at times this means the baby is not getting proper nutrition and can lead to being induced early. I'm just really nervous because everything has been going well. She's been doing great. I just don't know what to think at this point. Am I freaking out for nothing? Is anyone else going through this too? I don't know how I?m supposed to be feeling about it. I started crying on the way home and I haven't been overly emotional my entire pregnancy! My husband is telling me that I?m stressing over nothing but it doesn't feel like nothing to me.
Re: Small for Gestational Age
I just posted this in my birth story for sunflowers post...
I was told she wasn?t the size she ?should be? at 38 weeks and they didn?t think she weighed a full 4 pounds, and they thought here limbs were too short...
DD was born 2 days after I was told this and was a healthy 6lb 10oz very normal sized baby.
I would try not to worry too much as their measurments can be very wrong. (I know easier said than done....)
Try not to worry about it right now. Measurements can just be off, and can change from one appt to the next. Maybe she was laying funny. Maybe she's getting ready to hit a growth spurt. There are a ton of maybe's, but your u/s on Wednesday will give you more definite answers.
I don't know how far along you are, but I'm assuming you've measured ok up until now? And your previous u/s showed everything to be ok? Some people just measure big or small for no real reason. But I'd try to stay off the internet until you have your appt on Wed to confirm things. GL!
Try not to stress, but I know that's easier said than done.
Do you happen to know how small you're measuring? +/- a week or 2 is totally normal and nothing to be alarmed about. Like your doctor said, it could be just the way your baby was laying at that point in time. Fundal measurements are a good tool to use as they're obviously non invasive, but it also most definitely has its faults.
Try not to worry and look at it as a good opportunity to get to see your baby again.
For DD1, we were told she would be very small and did various ultrasounds and non-stress tests. She was born at exactly 40 weeks a healthy 6 lbs 11 oz and 21 in.
Just want to be sure... you have not had an ultrasound yet? The belly measurements can vary by some weeks so don't concern yourself about that alone..
Once you go to you ultrasound though, they're going to hope that baby is measuring above the 15th percentile for gestational growth.(they'll check the circumference of the head and the abdomen to figure this out) I just had a similar situation where my ultrasound two weeks ago showed the head measuring near the 5th percentile and the abdomen near the 10th, the concern was an IUGR, this growth restriction could mean baby is having an issue getting nutrients, potential problem with the placenta or the cord. So I went back today and they checked again and blood flow in the cord is good and fluid levels were good, plus the baby caught up a bunch, 10th percentile for head and 20th percentile for abdomen. They're no longer worried... but you don't need to worry at all until you have the ultrasound and get some actual numbers to work with. :-)
Been lurking for a while but this is my first post.
I had a similar thing last week. On Wednesday I was measuring at 22cm and should have been at 29cm (I was 29w3d). I went for an ultrasound the next day on Thursday and they did all of their measurements of baby, and the fluid, and check his heart rate etc. They came to the conclusion during that visit that I had low amniotic fluid. My ob arranged an appointment with a specialist for today at the hospital. During today's appointment I first had an ultrasound with a nurse who did all of the regular measurements, and then I had a doctor do an ultrasound and he looked more in depth into the amniotic fluid, the placenta, the heart beat, and the blood flow through the umbilical cord. The doctor came to the conclusion that I may just have a tiny baby (both my husband and I are short than average and quite slender), which may be nothing to worry about, and also that I had low amniotic fluid, which may be something to worry about, and that the blood flow and placenta looked okay about they should have looked a little better. In conclusion, from now on I have an appointment with the specialist at the hospital every monday (jn addition to my regular ob appointments) just to keep a close eye on baby and make sure that he is still growing, and that his small size doesn't mean something else. I wasn't put on bed rest, but told to 'conserve' my energy, and try to eat some more in order to give baby boy some more nutrients in hopes that he grows bigger. Hopefully if he is just small for his gestational age then I might just have to have him a few weeks early because of the low fluid issue.
