We got DS a ride-on toy and a pop-up ball tent (for inside play on those too-hot summer days and cold winter days). Grandparents got him a tumbling class, which he loved. I also suggest push toys like a ball popper, or a convertible push/ride-on toy.
my parents got him a radio flyer wagon and that was his "big" gift. we got him several Sesame Street puppets and a puzzle.
Yeah, we actually didn't get him much - some Ikea toys and puzzles. He received so many gifts from friends and family that we actually put some away until Christmas. This past year he has been all about the ball pit, his play kitchen, the water table and riding toys, though.
yep, we were not going to get him anything because we knew that between the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends, he would be showered with gifts.
but since we didn't get him anything for Christmas that year and we thought that the puppets were really cute, we "splurged". lol.
we have relatives with kids who just get SO much at every holiday (seriously, they do 4th of July presents!), it's kind of sickening. so as much as I love buying things for Warner, we try really hard not to go overboard.
Of the gifts DD received for Christmas (she was 9 months) and 1st birthday the most beloved were the fisher price ball popper and ride on toys. Last summer when she was 15 months I bought her a sandbox and that has been a huge hit as well. We also bought her a swing for her 1st birthday that we attached to the porch of our shed (odd, I know) that is very well loved.
This past weekend TRU was having a BOGO sale on Fisher Price toys, so we got them the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Home and the Fisher Price Ride-On Dino. I've heard that 1-year olds love both of these. Our biggest problem now is that DH and I can't wait to give it to them and might have to open one of them early.
You're all making me feel better. I'm considering just putting some money into his college account. He already has a lot of toys, and he doesn't understand the concept of birthday gifts yet, so it's not like he'll be miffed if we don't get him anything. I should probably enjoy this while it lasts.

We got her the Little People Happy Sounds Home (it was on a flash sale from Walmart for $15, regularly $40) so I couldn't pass it up, and a Minnie Mouse / Daisy Duck puppet set. Her birthday is December 10, so between everyone else and Christmas, the child was opening a present a day through mid-January!
We didn't get DS anything big for either his first or second birthday. He got more than enough toys from his aunts and uncles and grandparents. I think I did get some new books and CDs right around each birthday, though.
Re: What did you get your LOs for their 1st birthday?
I'm not sure if this is the best decision because of the noise factor. But I think he'll like it.
