My hero is a personal hero. My grandma, Elaine. She is my hero for so many reasons. She met my grandpa before he went to Europe for WWII and they wrote letters to keep in touch. She raised 7 kids, including my mom. She survived breast cancer and a mastectomy. She suffers with severe back pain, but still manages to have a smile on her face. She is a great example of being a strong woman, I wish I can be as strong as she is.

This challenge is sort of a redeeming one for me. When I was in middle school, we had to write a short story about who our hero was, and I, thinking this is what they wanted, picked my grandfather. It made sense to me - he was a war hero, and that was the sort of things other kids were writing about.

I should have gone with my gut reaction and that was my mom. She stopped a cycle of abuse in the family and raised me practically on her own. Then she got us both away from my bio-dad, and I'm the person I am today because of her. So, she'll probably never see this, but I'm proud to declare that my hero is my mom.

And she has a rocking, French name to boot.

I chose Mr. Grant, because he can be traced to my family tree.

I chose Florence Nightengale. I read a story about her when I was a little girl and was always inspired by her.

I chose one of my ancestors. Its due to him (well, his wrongful death) that got my family a piece of Virginia land (that's still in the family) and his son moved here (in the 1650's!!) if it wasn't for that, I might not be an American today.

I've chosen Willa Cather.  She was such a strong female especially for the time period that she lived in.  Her writing style has inspired me in my own work and her writing has touched me immensely.  I also appreciate that while she may have been a lesbian she refused to acknowledge the rumors stating on one occasion that her sexual preference had nothing to do with her writing.

Unfortunately photobucket isn't working right now so it'll be a little while before I get a picture up.

    Checking in for July!

Sorry I'm late. This one was so hard for me at first. This morning I had the idea to look over my name list to see if any were added due to people I admire, and it hit me!

I can't believe I didn't think of it before. Although his first name, William, is one of my favorite boys names, he has nothing to do with why I like the name William. But Barret was actually added to my list because of William Barret Travis.

He was a teacher, a lawyer, and a military leader in the Texan Army. He was a brave, hard working, loyal, audacious man, with excellent grammar and a way with words, who accomplished more in his short 26 years on this earth than most people do in their lifetime.

He died fighting for Texas' independence at the Battle of the Alamo, and although the his men lost that battle, he inspired the rest of the Texan Army to win the war ("Remember the Alamo!"). Therefore, he played an integral role in gaining Texas' independence from Mexico, which would later allow it to become a part of the United States. I would be proud to bestow his middle name upon my son, as I would be proud if he carried any of the qualities I listed above.
