2nd Trimester

Ladies need your help, what did your 1st visit include???

I had my first prenatal visit last week and I must say it was weird. I feel like they rushed me out the door and didn't explain anything. Also, I was fully expecting to get a pap but that never happened. Not that I minded, just wondering what went on at your first visit? This was the 1st time I've been to this place & my last pap was 2 years ago. Feeling confused.

  • I had a pap at my first prenantal appt. However, it was my first time at this practice, and I hadn't had a pap in about 2 years.

I had one even though I had just had one five months earlier, but that is my doctor's policy. Did you already have one in the last year maybe?

  • I did not, only because I had one in october and my first ob visit was back in early March.

  • At my first visit I had an ultrasound done, they took a urine sample to check for sugar, weighed me, and took my blood pressure. The doctor then came in and went over a detailed list of me, DH, and our families health history and any questions I had. I did not get a pap smear because I had one in March. I'm sorry you had to leave your first appointment feeling confused, that had to be disappointing! Hopefully your next visit is much better for you!

  • No, I had one less than 6 months prior.

  • i did not have a PAP, but that's because i had just had one 2 months prior. I'm sorry you felt so rushed! My appointment lasted about 2 hours and i think i was the one rushing it because i was just ready to be done. Have you been there before? Did they treat you the same? Maybe it's time for a new ob or cnm whichever you're using..

  • I would definitely raise your concern at or before your next appointment. Depending on the doctor they might require that you set up a separate appointment for your pap, as these appointments ("annuals") tend to take awhile. When I got to my first prenatal appointment, the first thing I did was ask for an annual as well since it had been so long since my last.

  • My 1st visit started with a urine test, then a pap, breast exam, blood pressure/weight and then blood work to confirm.
  • My 1st appt our Dr introduced himself, gave us a handbook, we went through family history, routine urine sample/weight/blood pressure, ultra sound, and yes a pap. He didn't seem rushed at all and was very attentive. This is my 3rd and this was about the way each visit went before. They should have at the very least scheduled you for a pap on the way out. I would feel very neglected if my visit went the way yours did. It leaves you feeling more lost and confused than you were before you went in. I'm sorry...you should seek another Dr. If there's several Dr's in this practice, schedule your next appt with someone else.
  • I had just had a pap 2 weeks prior at my yearly so I didnt need one at my first prenatal appt.  Other than that they did all the necessary blood work...pee test etc and I met with the dr and sat down and discussed what all to expect over the next 9 months.

  • My first appointment was at 8 weeks, and they did a full health bcakground, weight, blood pressure, urine test, confirmation ultrasound, bloodwork, and we discussed dietary needs, weight gain, exercise, testing, and how me being HPV postive could effect the pregnancy and the baby (it doesn't). They didn't do a pap because I had gotten one 2 months proior. I agree with the pp's, if you felt rushed and confused, I would at least bring it up at the next appointment, if not find another doctor.
  • At my first visit I was about 10 weeks. They did a full health background, weight, blood pressure, urine test, bloodwork, and discussed what tests would be coming up. He also did a pap (it's standard practice where I go). In addition, we went over the do's and don'ts about pregnancy. Oh, and they used the doppler and found the baby's heart beat.

If you felt rushed, I would bring it up to the doctor and if you still don't get satisfaction, then you can find a new doctor. It's definitely a doctor you need to feel comfortable with and that they are listening to you and your concerns.

  • My doctor had me in Four times in a matter of a few weeks. First to meet her then for an ultrasound, then to see the nurse then my PAp.

  • On my first visit I actually just seen the nurse, who went over all my history and answered any questions I had, and gave me a bunch of pamphlets and magazines and coupons and stuff. I had my pap on my second visit 2 weeks later and blood tests and bp and fetal heart tones and urine. that is just how they do it at my Dr's. maybe that is what they will do with you??

  • I was also a new patient to the practice. I had my first visit at 11 weeks. They did a medical history, gave me a bunch of pamphets and free crap. They did height, weight, bp and blood work done. Then I had an u/s to determine my EDD. Tehe first appt I thought was horrible. I had questions they just seemed to shrug off and told me everything I needed to know was in my informational packet. I know I'm a FTM but I felt my questions should be addressed during my appt, not just them telling me to read the packet.

My second appt was SO much better than the first. I had a different nurse, who didn't rush me, even though they were running about 90 min behind. I had a pap done during this appt, heard LO hearbeat for the first tim
