Starting solids and water question.

I plan to start solids in a few weeks when C is 6 months. He is ebf, and I have never given him any water. My question is, once solids are started, to I also need to give him a little bit of water, or if not, when should I start? Thanks for any input!

You don't have to give them water when they start solids because they'll get plenty of hydration from your BM, but offering it in a cup (sippy or regular) at 6 months is fine.

  • Agree with PP. I do give about an ounce or two of water in a sippy cup during dinnertime just for practice but I don't make sure she drinks any.

  • Once we started solids, LO became so stopped up the Pedi recommended a little water in a sippy cup at meals.  I also have it with us when we go out being that it's summer and HOT out for a little drink now and again.  She never takes much more than an ounce or two  throughout the day so it doesn't fill her up but it does seem to be helping with the constipation.  I sometimes add a teaspoon of prune juice to the 5 oz cup of water just to help keep her regular plus it gives it just enough of a sweet taste to make it more appealing.  We now have at least one healthy poop a day and she no longer looks like her eyeballs are going to pop out of her head to get it out.
