Fundraisers?

How do you feel about them?

We had a note on our mailbox, probably a neighbor kid....he is asking for bottles and cans to support his college fund. He put a specific day for pick up and said his goal is 5 per house. Is this normal now days? I will sometimes give a bag to the music boosters or whatever, but we do usually take our own back to cover the deposit on the next case of beer or whatever. I didn't realize individuals did this for personal costs.....guess it is the same as picking the trash.....just a cleaner/classier way. I doubt I will donate to him...heck, we need to start saving for R! lol

Totally different.....but do you donate to your local 100% volunteer fire/ambulance depts during their fund drives? This I support, but can't always give. I do like the tax deduction though. I was a volunteer fire fighter back in the day, and had to do door to door funds drives. We rode on a truck and walked in groups.....in uniform. Boy oh boy....some people were SO rude! It is fine if you can't or wish not to, but some people went on political tirades that would make your head spin!

Re: Fundraisers?

  • I think the neighborhood boy collecting cans for his own college fund is genius! Hey, why not.  I mean there are plenty of people that just put the cans out at the curb or worse in the trash.  Maybe he'll find a neighbor or two willing to give him the cans.

All of my parents' neighbors give my dad their cans and bottles (have for years) and my dad takes them to the recycling place (much different in CA than here).  He splits the money between my brother and I, only now my portion goes straight into DD's savings account.  I think she'll get a few hundred a year from her grandpa taking away cans. ;-)

I don't live in area with a volunteer fire department but I would probably donate.  The only groups that I flat out won't give to are those that I know have an anti-gay stance or policy.

  • Good point about the kid collecting...my old boss used to put all of theirs in the recycle bin for the trash guy. The trash guy didn't even take them, must be a rule or something. I would take them sometimes, but often missed it. If this kid can make a buck, why not!

That is cool about your dad and his neighbors!

  • When I was a cheerleader in highschool we did a bottle/can collection every year. (since we got no money from the district for anything like buses to the games, or uniforms) It was always a huge $ maker for us... since we did it every year, some people would save their empty bottles for us for months and months in advance.

It was a gross, messy fundraiser though. Stinky old beer bottles and sticky soda cans, yuck!

I would probably gladly donate to a neighborhood kid for his college fund (as long as I "knew" the family at least a little, and didn't think he'd be using the money to party on the weekend!) I hate, hate, hate taking back the empty cans! It's not worth the $5 I'd get back!

  • We do not drink much that comes in bottles or cans, but what we do have I keep in the garage for this sole purpose, when the Boy Scouts or other group comes around for them.  I hate returning bottles, so I welcome it, but again, if we have 2 dozen in there for 6 months, that is a lot.

  • I am not certain would donate to an individual kid I could not be positive he was actually collecting for college.  I actually really hate fundraisers!  I did SO MANY fundraisers in HS since the budget was always short, one year they voted down sports so all the teams had to fund their entire seasons.  I remember doing bottle and can drives that year and getting screamed and lectured by a couple of my neighbors who had very strong opinions of the school board and sports, I was tramatized!

I get so many fundraising knocks on my door, it is crazy.  I'll do bottle drives and any thing under $5.  I wish I could do them all, but there was one day I had 3 kids selling local discount cards @ $20 each!  That was just one evening!

  • Ya....unless I knew the family I would not be donating to some kid's random whatever fund.  College is a great goal, but I bet it goes to something else.  He'll get his driver's license before graduating high school, I bet it goes to his 1st car.

I glady buy real fundraiser stuff for kids and families that I know.  Or if it is for the local school program.

We have some lady that pulls in to our neighborhood (we have seen her do it 3 times now) and her 3 little kids - probably 4, 5, and 7 - unpile and go door to door selling candy bars while she sits there.  They don't even live in our neighborhood.

  • We did the bottle drive when the local HS was doing it, but I am not sure that I would be participating for some random neighborhood kid. We really would take our bottles back and use the $ toward our grocery bill, so it is not like we would just throw them away.

I don't mind fundraisers, in general, because my family always participated with ours, but we never went around the neighborhood and asked random people - only the people we were friendly with. Is the "fill the boot" thing volunteer or regular FD? Because I usually do that, if I have cash.

I have only seen one FD do a fill the boot drive, and I refuse to put a penny in there because it backs up traffic and causes accidents!  It used to make me so mad when I would spend a half hour sitting in traffic trying to get to work (only way to get anywhere was down this stretch because of a canal and a lake) only to find that the thing backing up traffic for miles was a stupid boot drive!  And once I had someone back up into my car because of the traffic they couldn't see me coming!  Old people of course.

  • I generally support them.  I don't always donate but I'm not offended by people asking and I think that it's great that the boy is "working" for his college fund!  :
