Baby and Temperature

MIL and FIL are watching LO at the end of the month. It will be the first time she is sleeping way from us for a whole night. I am a little concerned because MIL and FIL don't use AC at all during the summer. Its been between 85-95 degrees. Aren't young babies supposed be at around 72 degrees when sleeping? Should I ask them to turn on the AC or will it not be a big deal?

I kind of forgot about this when we talked about asking them to babysit.

I would be concerned about LO being overheated and dehydrated if she's sweating a lot. You can't make them turn on the AC, you can ask them to if the house gets over 80 but they may not do it. She can also sleep and spend most of the day in her diaper. I think I've read the ideal temp for LO's to sleep in is 74 but personally we sleep how we are comfortable and dress LO appropriately. Good luck!!!

  • Isn't there a link hotter temps and SIDS? I'm not able to search it at the moment, but I thought I read that. Maybe if you found that and showed them they would be more compelled to leave it on.

  • Lots of people don't have air conditioning and their babies do just fine. We hardly ever used our air until the baby arrived. She is down right evil if she gets too hot, even if we strip her down to her diaper. Maybe mention to them that you notice that your little one gets cranky when they are too warm. I bet they will turn on the air just so they don't have to deal with a cranky baby. Also mention that if it gets too hot you offer more bottles to stop dehydration.

  • Lots of people like us don't have a/c. Plus what did people do before a/c? Your LO will be fine for a night without it.
  • Is 85-90 day time temps or night time temps? If it only gets up into the 80's in the daytime I wouldn't worry.

  • A lot of people don't have AC is true...but if your baby is not used to the high temps, then she probably won't handle it very well. Maybe have her sleep in only a diaper with a fan blowing?
