Calorie intake/calorie burn while BF'ing

  I am trying to lose the 60 lbs I gained during pregnancy and am finally ready to start excercising.  I am trying to lose around 2 lbs a week so that would put me at around 7.5 months to lose the weight, but I just have a few questions..if someone has the answer to them that would be great!

1.  How many calories a day should I be consuming while BF'ing?

2.  How many calories a day is it safe to burn?  I have no idea if this would matter or not, I just really don't want to do anything to sabotage my milk supply.

    2. im not sure but i know bf'ing alone burns around 500 per day.

  • Well, not knowing your weight you cant really be giving an accurate calorie range. I am a PE/Health teacher and have always been very involved in fitness and nutrition. I've always read that you should take your current weight and multiply that by 7. That is how many calories you should consume to create a deficit which is how the body loses weight. (consuming less calories than your body burns = weight loss) Since your are BFing I would add 500 to that number and try not to go over. Obviously you may have to adjust if you aren't losing weight or if your milk supply starts to go down... Its all about experimenting and finding what works for your body. Keep in mind if that does work for you and you are losing weight, you will constantly have to be adjusting your number of calories down with each pound you lose to create a deficit... Good luck.

  • For me, it was not the amount of calories, but the quality of them.  I ate a ton of food and the weight came off easily (2 pounds a week average).  Eat plenty of high quality protein at each meal, a wide variety of vegetables throughout the day, and don't skimp on the fat. 

    Edit:  I never counted calories, I just ate until I wasn't hungry anymore :).

  • You should consume AT LEAST 1800 calories per day if you do moderate exercise. Just remember that the more you exercise the more calories you burn= the more weight you lose.  I am also BFing and trying to lose the 60 lbs. I put on while pregnant. I've lost 30 so far. I snack a lot during the day (rice cakes and lots of water based fruits and veggies) and I drink TONS of water.  I would also like to say that I exercise all the time, but that would be a lie. I do, however, try to get in about a 2 mile walk with LO (he loves our walks) and about 30 mins of hardcore exercise.

  • How many calories you burn from BFing depends on how many ounces you produce each day. You can estimate approximately 20 cals per ounce (though for some women this number is lower/higher).
