Food Allergy

Nut question

So, my girl is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts but she can have almonds.  Does this make any sense to you guys?  She is also allergic to milk and soy and we are trying to find some alternatives to yogurt and snack bars.  She has had almond and coconut ones with no issues.  I want to try some other bars but I am paranoid that she is going to break out.  What would you do?  We tried Lara bars with almonds but she doesn't like those.

Edit: I should add that the allergist said we could avoid all nuts or do our own trial since the RAST test contridicted the blood test.  So, that is why I am so confused.

Re: Nut question

  • How did you come to the tree nut diagnosis? An almond is a tree nut. My DD was tested for peanuts and had a huge reaction, so we were told to avoid all tree nuts as well as a precaution until she's a bit older for more testing. She was accidentally given something with almond, though, and again had a huge reaction. So for us, so far, she's most definitely allergic to peanuts and almonds, and we are avoiding ALL tree nuts to be safe.

I'm just wondering how your dr diagnosed tree nuts but you know your LO is okay with almonds.

  • When we had the testing done, she was allergic to peanuts and pastacios.  So, the dr wanted us to avoid all nuts but I told her we had already given Keira almonds in her yogurt.  So, she said that was okay.  I am so just confused by all the testing and it seems like it is wrong or maybe I am in denial.  We did try to give her a trail mix and took out the nuts (it had peanuts and cashews) and after 2 weeks she ended up with hives.  So, it seems like her nut allergy is not as severe as her milk and soy allergy.  I was just hoping seeing the allergist would make things easier but it seems like I have to do a trial on my own.  Or does anyone have any good suggestions on what I should do?  Should I just stay away from all nuts and stick to what has been working?  I just feel like I should be able to offer her more variety.
  • During our last testing my doctor said to avoid all nuts.. even though he was negative for tree nuts.  i told her he has almond butter all the time and she said, that's fine than.  I think they don't want you accidentally give peanuts.  Many nut bags have been CC with peanuts so maybe it's just easier to say avoid all.

I have tried these --> https://www.allergygrocer.com/allerenergy-nutrition-bar-apple-cinnamon-from-ags-foods.html but haven't given it to my son yet.

  • DS#2 is allergic to pistachio and cashew but can eat all other nuts.  He reacted to pistachio which is what had us do the test in the first place.  You can test for all individual nuts or a sample panel.

Most allergists tell you to avoid all nuts b/c they did not screen for each individual one and also because the risk for cross contamination is high.  But DS#2 eats Nutella almost every day and has not had any issues with reactions.

Ok, that makes sense about the testing and advice to avoid all nuts. Like PP said, the risk for cross contamination in products containing any kind of nut is high.. so its just easier to avoid them all.

I would NOT ever be comfortable "doing a trial on my own". Reactions can happen so quickly, and there's no way to predict how severe any given reaction may be, so the risk of something horrible happening is just too much for me to perform my own food challenges without the care of her allergist.

If I were you, and this is just my opinion, I would continue feeding almonds since you know she can tolerate them, but I would avoid all other tree nuts and peanuts until you can have a more specific test done and maybe even food challenge in your allergist's office. IMO, she's not going to be harmed by not eating a variety of nuts. DD gets NO nuts of any kind and she's just fine. :)

  • Nutella has skim milk in it, bummer but AllerEnergy bar looks good.  Thanks for the help guys, I just feel like Keira can't have so much stuff, I wanted to try to branch out more but I also want to make sure I am not putting her at risk.  I wish there was a test that could tell me 100% what she is or is not allergic to.  She is also allergic to egg but I have tried a few things with egg in it and she has done okay, so I am hoping it is just egg and not egg cooked in things.  I guess I will stay away from the additional nuts for now and just look for more things without them.

Care to review these? What did you think of them in terms of taste/consistency?

they weren't bad. I remember the one i had was a bit chewy which i really liked, rather than crunchy.  I don't remember which flavor i had though.  Also it has a very strange  texture b/c it has little balls.. not sure what they are, but the balls were strangely delicious... lol -i wish i could explain this better.. but nothing was bad, i ate the entire thing.  Worth trying.

  • I'm actually not surprised by this. Almonds are technically part of the peach family, and are not really tree nuts at all. They are nut-like and come from trees, so the FDA groups them in with other tree nuts (like coconuts, which also are not nuts). Like most people with tree-nut allergies I can't eat almonds, but I can see where someone else with the same diagnosis would be able to.
