operation big kid (sorta) bed commencing...

and I'm scared, very scared.

we went ahead and converted his crib to a toddler bed because moving the furniture around so that a single bed could fit in his room and the crib would go elsewhere just seemed like way too much of a PITA for now.

we bought him an Elmo book about moving to a big kids bed and have been talking it up all weekend and tonight it's on. DH is reading to him right now. I'm nervous. The good news is that he (Warner) is super tired out tonight, but the bad news is that he is still VERY excited about his bed. We've been trying to reinforce the fact that once he is in the bed, he must stay in the bed, but he pretty much doesn't listen to anything we say so this should be interesting.

  • Good luck! Let us know how it goes. We should probably move in that direction soon, but I've been putting it off. The idea of a free range DS scares me :)

  • Good luck!  I will be in your shoes this fall when we make the change  so DC#2 can get the crib.  Let me us know what works and what doesn't!

  • he's finally back in his bed (for now) but basically he has been running around his room for the past 45 minutes. the only reason that he hasn't left his room is that we put one of those child proofing door knob covers on his door knob.

tomorrow I think I need to move the video monitor to a better spot so I can see more of the room and not just his bed.

his room is about as babyproofed as it can be, but I'm such a worry wort!

  • Good luck with it. I'm dreading the day we have to make that transition. Let us know how it goes.

  • good luck! just tell him each night "no getting out, stay in bed" and reinforce that if he needs something, he just has to ask you for it.

DD now says "I won't get out of bed" along with her good-nights/I love yous each night

(of course a few days ago, she figured out how to open her door which has a knob cover, so she's free-ranging now!)

  • I hope tonight went well.  Three cheers for Warner.
  • Good luck!  We waited with maggie until she was just over 3yo (kind of a long time) because like you we were scared scared scared.  She actually did pretty well.  I hope it goes as well for Warner!
  • Overall it went well. That first hour he was totally high on his new freedom and was like a crazy man. But I finally showed him his Elmo book again and told him that "see Elmo is in his big boy bed and going to sleep. he doesn't get up and run around...you want to be like Elmo, right?" And he said yes and didn't get out of bed again. No idea if that actually worked (probably not) or if he was just tired, but he finally fell asleep a little after 9pm and slept until around 7:30, which is about a half hour later than usual.

Now I'm dreading nap time today, but I've been running him around like crazy this morning in the hopes that he'll be super tired for his nap.

  • Good luck with the nap! The power of Elmo is pretty impressive. We have the Elmo potty video, the Elmo check up time book, and an Elmo goes to the doctor video. I credit Elmo with our relatively stress-free two-year well visit. I think we may need to get the Elmo big kid book now :)

why don't you lay down in his bed with him? DH does that w/ DD on weekends, usually he ends up napping the whole time w/ her

  • We moved DD to a toddler bed soon after she turned 2 because I was pregnant with DS.  The first two nights were rough: she cried and even spent one night asleep on the floor :(  It does get better though!  We always do the same routine (bath, story) and though she's in bed when we leave the room usually we hear her running around for a while after, but she does settle down.

Nap time is always a challenge.  Most of the time she doesn't really sleep but I still think having a quiet place to play or read quietly is good for her.  I love going in to get her up and find her in bed reading to her bunny.  She loves the freedom of being able to get books whenever she wants.  She can make a mess of her room but it doesn't take long to clean up.

Good luck!  It does get better!

ha! that would be interesting! it's just a converted crib and I'm far too tall to lay down in it....and I don't think it's mean to hold and adult's weight. Besides we've never done anything approaching bed sharing, so Warner would probably get even more wound up if I tried that.

He never came close to napping yesterday, but bedtime went off without a hitch. He stayed in bed all night and slept fine. And this morning, even after he woke up, he stayed in bed until we went in to get him. so of course, we praised him to the skies for this...hopefully it will continue!! He's always been a great nighttime sleeper and just a so-so napper, so this isn't too surprising. I'm just really going to miss nap time :-(

  • Maggie stopped napping around 2yo.  At that time she was still in her crib so I just gave her some stuffed animal toys and she would play for a little while.  He may just be too excited to nap in the big boy bed for now.  Even now Maggie still goes into her room for some quiet time where she gets to play while Molly naps and I get sh!t done around the house.  If there wasn't a nap time where they were both in their rooms I would never get anything done around the house on the weekends because they both are a little clingy.
  • FWIW, DD sleeps in a queen-size bed:)
