I've posted before about my crazy ILs, but this story is too good not to share, especially after previous post on ILs discipling LOs...
So MIL and I had a heart to heart this week. During our conversation she asked if Dh and I planned to spank. I said absolutely not, we didn't believe in spanking and with my background as a child mental health therapist (for kids with the worst of worst behavior problems), I felt I had more disciplining techniques up my sleeve than the average parent. Also since part of job includes teaching parenting skills that discourage spanking I'd be a bit of a hypocrit if I spanked my own child.
Immeidately after I share my view on spanking she begins to tell me that I should reconsider, because that's how she taught my nephew to fall asleep on his own. She said everytime he would get out of his toddler bed (@ 20 months) she would pop him so "it would sting" right at the top of his thigh. Her justification was that she didn't leave welts or bruises
She then offered to babysit Coop for us!!!!! I made it very clear (and was possibly a little rude) and told her that if anyone ever spanked Coop we would never let the person be around him.
She also then proceeded to tell me about Dh's cousin who treated her preschooler to much like a baby by not spanking him and how he whined when he didn't get his way. I think she was implying that I "baby" my 10 month old.
Atleast I finally helped her understand that until they completely quit smoking Coop won't be coming to visit them... she seemed genuinely upset that Dh hadn't been very clear about how much the smoking irritated C's asthma. So hopefully things in that area will improve now... she even rented a non-smoking beach house for the family vacation this year...all for Coop! (which kind of sucks, b/c we were going to use the smoking as our way out of it...looks like I'll be doing a beach trip with the crazy ILS now
)
Re: Worst advice EVER!

Honestly I am often surprised by the number of parents that choose to spank. I really don't understand how correlated hitting with anything would help your child. Just doesnt make sense..but that is me.
Same here! I have never heard that advice before. Geez.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
I guess it was to say if you get OUT of bed you get pain, so stay there? I just kinda nodded and kept my mouth shut.
Oh my.
I don't get the idea of punishment in general (corporal or non) as a way of getting a child to do something normal & biological, like eating, sleeping, or using a toilet, but I realize a lot of people in the real world think my views are super-hippy-dippy on that.
So, as an NCO in the Army, I am kind of a "mother" figure to my young soldier; Maybe the next time they stay up playing video games at night rather than going to bed when I tell them "lights out" I should just hit them. Heavens knows I have a few I have wanted to smack from time to time.
Yeah, that would go over well...
Little dominatrixes in training ;-) (I know the plural should be "dominatrices," but I didn't want to seem too snobby.)
