Houston Babies

New and question

Hi everyone! I'm Mary and reside in Sugar Land. We are currently expecting our baby in December!! I had a question for you all. Although I would love to be a SAHM we unfortunately can't budget it and I will have to go back to work 6-8 wks after delivery depending on whether it's a vaginal or c-section birth. When did you start looking at day cares/nannies? Why do you prefer one than the other?

Re: New and question

  • Hi. With our first, we started looking too late. I think I would look very early (as soon as I could); waiting lists can be long at the favorite places.

It was hard to get a slot and tour them after I had our first. Circumstances sidelined me at the time I had planned to look before having him, but even that would have been a little too late.

I know someone who really likes Casa di Bambini out there in SL somewhere.

Good luck. Daycare has brought many positive experiences to my children's lives. We have made some great friends for ourselves and our kids have made good friends through the years. It can be a pretty positive thing when you find the right fit.

  • I started looking I guess at about 5 months.  I took 12 weeks off after having him.

  • We explored different options (nanny, in-home day care, daycare) and decided to go with the daycare.

We think that daycare is better (for us) because DD is always surrounded by many adults (not just one) that can keep an eye on each other and stop each other from doing stupid or dangerous things. With a nanny or an in-home daycare, you really have to trust that one person, because they're alone with your baby for long periods of time.

Daycare is also great for interacting with other children, and that's something that DD really enjoys.

Also, a daycare receives periodic visits from the police and fire department to check that everything is OK, that they have first aid equipment, a good evacuation plan, etc.

    Good luck!'

  • We started looking at 3 months. We're in the Heights area and a lot of fulltime care places fill up early.

I haven't had my LO yet, but last time I spoke to centers about our enrollment it seemed that we'll be able to get into one.

I won't lie, I was nervous about gettting in (still a tiny bit nervous) and recommend looking early. There is no harm in going early.
