Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is he hungry?

G is still waking up around 3 times at night at 8 1/2 months. This is after 5-8 wakings a night. Is there any way he's still hungry? He's nursing every 3 hours and gettings solids 2-3 times a day.

  • Is he waking around the same time every night?! It could be habit..

It's pretty much every 2-3 hours depending on the night, which definitely seems like a habit. But, I can't get him back to sleep without nursing him. He won't take a pacifier, so he's using me as one. I've sleep trained for naps, I guess I'm gonna have to do bedtime wakings too.

My guess would be habit, but I would trust your gut.  At that age, my DS was waking once a night, after about 9-10 hours (he goes to bed EARLY).  I could tell that he was hungry at that time.  If he happened to wake other times, it seemed clear that he wasn't really hungry, but he would always nurse if I let him.

(My DS still wakes up at 4 or 5 AM to nurse every morning, but I know that it is really habit now, more than hunger.  He is 13 months old. I haven't tried to break it yet, but I may soon).

  • Probably habit, not hunger.  Look in to a book called "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West.  We had good luck with her method.  HTH

  • I asked our pedi the same question last week. She said by this age it's habit, not hunger. We are working on sleep training now. Good luck.

  • Our son was doing the same thing, and I started following up a few of my day time BF sessions with a bottle and than giving him a bottle of BM before bed instead of just BF.  Within 3 days he was sleeping through the night.  My thought was in my case he had become a lazy nurser and wasn't getting enough.
