Food Allergy

F/U.. RE: epipen injection couple of weeks ago

Recently I wrote about my nanny injecting my son an epipen b/c he ate some popcorn (and possible other things) at the park. So i ran into a next door neighbor this weekend who told me her nanny was at the park also with her daughter while this all happened.  (nanny forgot to tell me that part).. and her daughter actually ate the popcorn first, that's why my son ate it. (he probably would have eaten it either way)

My neighbors nanny told her that she recommended for my nanny to take my son into the school (forgot to tell me that also) and she said that he was swelling up like a balloon really fast.. his eyes were swelling and his cheeks looked fatter. (umm.. she forgot to tell me that also).  I was told there was a rash but it wouldn't make sense why from a rash (pretty bad rash) they would do the epipen.. the nurse should know better.. so it turns out that he actually started swelling up and by the time they gave the epipen his face was really big. and the rash was on his entire body (i didn't know that either but my DH said my nanny did say it)

This sort of gives me a piece of mind that the epipen was necessary.  And i was also told that my nanny was not studying while this happened and it was a total freak accident.. he was playing with a friend and both ate something from the floor.

I also heard from many people that there is a ton of popcorn out there that is made in peanut oil.. i went to the supermarket and read the popcorn ingredients and most say that it was made in a facility that produces peanuts.  One package did have peanuts as an ingredients (??).. His peanut allergy is ridiculously high so i wonder if he reacted to a CC. or there was actual peanut oil.

Thank god for EpiPens!

  • Wow, that is just scary to think about!  We are looking to move (in fact we just put an offer on a house) and we will need to change day cares.  I am seriously getting anxious over it.

I am so glad the epi pen was used.  And that she wasn't studying while it happened.  Are you still planning on getting rid of her in Dec?

  • I'm glad you got some more details on what really happened.  Maybe your nanny didn't tell you about the swelling b/c she was afraid you would be more upset?  Or she was too shaken up by the whole thing?  I'm sure she feels awful about your LO having a reaction on her watch and I'm also sure she knows you are upset with her about it.

I have vowed - and hope I can honor this - that I will never be upset with anyone who gives my LO's an epi.  It's easy to second guess whether is was "necessary" after the fact but I would much rather have someone give the epi when it wasn't needed than NOT give it when it was.

You will probably never know what actually caused the reaction which is hard.  But thank goodness your nanny was ready, with the epi and did the best she could in a stressful situation.

Good luck with the move! and congrats on the house!  It's so scary but the good thing about DC is that you have multiple eyes watching your child.. i get worried that my nanny will slack.

We are still getting rid of her for other reasons, but we're waiting until december b/c this way we can still keep her while i'm on maternity until she finds a new place.. and it's possible that she may be done with school this december so she may need to move on either way (which would be nice).. i love her but she's getting really lazy (naps during the day, forgets to clean up after herself, does things that i strictly say no to, eats way too much of our food and i have caught her take dinner home..  I feel exhausted constantly having a conversation with her and i can't imagine her taking care of two kids.. it would be too much.

i honesty want to stay home if the second baby has allergies b/c i can't imagine how much stress that might be on a nanny

    Couldn't agree with you more.

  • I am glad she used it when it was actually needed.  Having a child with allergies is hard.

BTW-I keep wanting to tell your your siggy picture is so freaking cute!

awww.. thank you! i need to change the siggy pic but thebump will not let me edit anything.

  • I do worry in places like the playground.  People don't think when they leaves bits of food behind that they could be putting someone's child at risk.  Its scary and it could happen to any of us.

I agree, thank God for epipens.  And thank God we live in a time where the medical technology exists to help out kids be healthy.
