Tummy time...ugh!

DD hates tummy time and so do I! I put her down and she screams within 5 minutes and usually spits up. I feel like a bad mommy, but we haven't been doing tummy time as much as we should. She can lift her head off the floor a little bit, but probably not like she should. Is anyone else struggling with this?

  • Dd only lasts about that long (she has pretty good head control though).  It helps Jolie when I kind of prop her arms up underneath her.  With ds, we lasted maybe 20 seconds and worked our way up.  He had much worse head control and didn't roll until after six months.  I'd say just keep working on it-little bits at a time.

  • I don't do much tummy time either, but my LO does have pretty good head control because we do other things like sitting up for short periods of time.  I think I need to start doing more tummy time sessions ASAP.

  • Liam hates tummy time too! He lasts about 5 minutes and throws a hissy fit. He has great head control though and when I prop him up in his boppy he can make himself sit up for a little bit. He also grabs my thumbs and I held him sit up and he pushes himself up on to his feet. He is getting strong, but I am afraid he won't be able to roll over or do any of the thing tummy time helps with.

Olivia hates tummy time too, she can roll over and has great head control (according to the pedi) I try putting new toys down for her to look at reach for but she still hates it.

  • DS hates tummy time. I made him do it this morning while I washed all his bottles and the formula pitcher. He screamed for about 10 minutes and then fell asleep. He can lift his head up but only about an inch or two off the ground. I feel like a bad mom some times because he probably should be farther along. I just hate forcing him to do it.

  • DD hated tummy time. She would scream and scream. Then last week, out of nowhere, she stopped fighting it. She still doesn't like it, but she doesn't scream anymore. She just glares at me and refuses to do anything. I figure it's some kind of progress. Hopefully she'll start moving around soon.

  • I was until this weekend, and then like magic she decided she loves it. I have no explination.

I think you're doing what you can. If you can only get five minutes a couple of times a day, then that's all you can get.

  • Both my kids dislike(d) tummy time.  Drew wouldn't tolerate it for more than 30 seconds and he would scream his head off.  I basically stopped doing it after a while.  Once he learned to roll on his own and started sleeping on his stomach he got plenty of tummy time.

Personally, I don't find it all that essential to do official, scheduled tummy time.  Yes, it's good to try and I do put Elizabeth down on tummy several times a day, but I don't worry about how long she lasts.  She'll push up, crawl, etc at some point no matter what!

  • Just do what you can. I don't buy into the "you must have x many minutes of tummy time x times a day". LO HATES tummy time. Usually after 30 seconds max he's screaming. I would NEVER let him lay there and cry himself to sleep after 10 minutes just to get tummy time in. He hardly needs his head supported anymore and rolled over from tummy to back yesterday. That's with maybe a combined total of 5 minutes of actual tummy time a day. He was holding his head up freakishly since day 1. We put him on our chest a lot and lean back and he's always pushed up like that. I think since we're there he doesn't realize he's being tricked into tummy time.

  • My FFC should be that I don't do enough tummy time......   He doesn't mind it, but he is sooooo happy to lay on his back and coo and giggle, the second I turn him over, I know that's the end of any floor time.
