Preemies

Low tone?

Anyone's LO have lower tone? How has it affected milestones/development? We were told ds has lower tone in the upper body. When we hold him upright, unless he is very well anchored, he is super wobbly and bobbles all over the place. Will this eventually improve with PT and work?

My DD has low tone in her head/shoulders/neck muscles. Our neos and pedi all said its pretty normal in preemies due to the combination of prematurity and then the amount of time they spend laying in a hospital bed when they would normally be developing those muscles (if born term).

We have OT twice a month from ECI and it seems to be helping a lot. Our OT gives me exercises to do and I do them every day. DD even has her own exercise ball and mat! In terms of milestones, she is a little behind on things like holding her head up but she is getting much better and everyone tells me that she will catch up in her own time.

  • E had Low Tone in her lower half of her body (still does). PT has helped and it is nice to have someone come over weekly to update us on her progress. It is hard, especially since I have twins and I try to compare their progress but E had many more complications so it isnt really fair. Sophia is rolling over each and every way all the time. She love baby push ups. She will bear weight on her legs standing in my lap. E doesnt really do any of those things yet... but they seemed pleased with her progress so I just try not to worry about it yet.

  • We were always told Evan has low muscle tone too. He was delayed on a lot of his gross motor skills, but I think a lot of that has to do with not getting any floor time for a long time due to severe reflux. Once he started getting floor time, he started improving. He didn't crawl till 16 months/12 adjusted, and didn't walk till 20/16 adjusted. At his 3 yr formal eval by his therapists, he no longer qualified for services because he's considered average for everything. You can tell that he's not the best kid at jumping around/navigating the playgrounds, but he keeps getting better, and we just keep exposing him, and having play that involves gross motor skills.
  • My LO has low tone in his upper body as well.  He has been receiving PT from early intervention for about a month now and I already notice improvements.  He has taken longer to tolerate belly time and to sit up assisted.  We are still working on these things but he is getting stronger and no longer screams when we put him on his belly.  I'm sure your LO will improve with PT, work and time.  Smile

  • We were told that our DD had low tone after her 1st evaluation with the NICU development team.  They gave us some ideas of exercises/therapy to do with her, and she was meeting her milestones by one year.  I definitely think the exercises helped.
