Sorry, I know this probably gets asked quite a bit, but I haven't been on here lately....
We are driving 12 hours next week to go visit Grandma & Grandpa, and I'm looking for ideas of new & exciting things to bring to keep the girls entertained. We have a DVD player so I will definitely be bringing that, and we both have iPhones (I have a ton of games on mine already, but any recs are welcome!). I was thinking of picking up a couple new things, so just wondering if you have any recs of things that were a hit with your child.
Re: Entertainment for 12 hour Road Trip
Could you make an i-spy type of game- a card w/ pictures of things that your kids will see and have them put on stickers as they encounter those things- cow, truck, school bus etc.?
Wrap small toys and give them a new one every 2 hrs or so.
Etch a sketch, latch puzzles, flash cards, lacing toys
For one trip, I made my own "I spy"game using a plastic bottle and rice. And then I put little trinkets/smal object in there and told them what to find. So, they have to turn it and shake it to find them. I also put items in a paper bag and gave them every hour.....new book, DVD, CD, snacks, toys, etc.

I also found out they make washable dry erase markers now, which makes me much more willing to allow them in the car!
My girls go nuts for cheap little junk from the dollar store, and I never buy that stuff, but for our road trip I may grab a few things just for novelty. I also ordered some kids' audio books from amazon (Dr. Seuss read by celebrities, and Flat Stanley series) and will burn CD's of non-annoying kids' songs soon (I recently borrowed the first Curious George movie so that soundtrack and Jack Johnson in general will now count as "their" music without making DH and I want to poke our eyes out listening to Dora or "The Wheels on the Bus" 90,000 times).

We just survived a 24 hour each way car trip.
What worked best where these search and find books from Costco. They are like a huge pad with tons of pages of Pixar or Disney themed search pages. That thing kept her entertained for HOURS.
They were cheap too.
We also took a ton of post card stamps and every stop we made picked up post cards, and she's color the back and we'd send them to whoever. She really looked forward to the activity, especially once the first one arrived and Grandma's house and grandma made a big deal on the phone about getting it in the mail.
