Need opinions from the BW experts

I have been lurking on here for a while and have decided that I would like to BW when LO is born.  I like the idea of a wrap but I'm torn between a Moby and K'tan.  I see advantages to both and would like opinions from the experts here (or if you hate both and love another let me know too)!  DH is also up for BW but he is a bigger guy (XXL shirts and 42 waist) so what will work for him?  TIA for the advice!!!

Re: Need opinions from the BW experts

  • Both of those are stretchy and will max out at about 15 lbs as the weight of LO causes the material to pull away from you in an way that is uncomfortable on the back. If you want to wear long-term I would go with a woven wrap or a mei tai. Wovens come in different lengths. You and your DH may be able to share a size 6 or 7 (and do different carries that work for your body size vs. the wrap length). Check out the forums on The Baby Wearer to get a feel for what may be a good compromise size. For a MT, you would want one with extra long straps.

  • I totally agree with everything PP said.

Wovens are definitely much cooler and are able to be used for the long haul (35lbs +) but there's something nice about snuggling a new LO in a stretchy wrap.  The K'Tan is nice and is slightly easier than the Moby, but it's really dependent on size and it doesn't sound like you and your DH could wear the same one.

Personally, I'd check around on your local craigslist, consignment shops, or thebabywearer.com to try to find a used Moby for $20 or so.  They're only able to be used comfortably for a few months so when they sell used they're normally in good shape.

  • I think you have gotten good advice. If you decide you want a K'tan I have two I am going to sell. A small green and a large warm cocoa one has been gently used and the other hasn't even been tried on. I also have a peanut shell wrap that has only been tried on once. We just dont use them anymore- I loved the K'tan for ease of use and spreading the wring out over both shoulders and it was super snuggly for the newborn days,ds loved it.

  • My LO is still young, so I am really loving the linen slings from SBP (sleeping baby productions) and the Moby. I think a Moby is great for the first couple months, then something not stretchy. I really love my sling and want a Mei Tai next, then an Ergo.

Go to YouTube and look for Moby instructions - you will see how awesome they are for little snuggly babies. I second going to the babywearer website and forum. It is A LOT of overwhelming information, so take your time and read about each type slowly. It seems so confusing at first, but with time starts to make sense.

  • K'tan has less of a learning curve than Moby.  Honestly I don't know too many guys who love wraps - stretchy or otherwise.  Lots of guys prefer a SSC like the Ergo.  There is an option for a waist extension to accomodate his size :)

You have gotten excellent advice here.  If you want to share with your DH, a K'Tan won't work.  I am not sure the Moby will be big enough either, actually.  My DH is the same size as yours.  Because of his build, carries a lot of his weight in his stomach, a Moby would have been great but he wasn't interested.  The Ergo is one of my favorite carriers, and you can get a newborn insert, and it fit DH even at hi XXL size without the extender, but it wasn't great on DH because of his stomach.  My Kozy MT has been the best for him, like a wrap, you can carry higher.

All of that said, I agree with pps about FSOT and craigslist.  I would suggest Moby be your first choice, as your DH may be able to use it, and KT as your second choice.  Then see what you can find cheap and in good condition, either would be fine for those first few months.  As your LO gets bigger, a lot of stores carry the Ergo so you can try it out.  GL!
