Maple Valley? Relocating from Las Vegas!

Hi!  I was wondering if anyone here can tell me a little about this city?  My husband will most likely be accepting an offer for a promotion that will take us to Maple Valley.  He grew up in a small town called Poulsbo up there and went to school at UW, but we've never visited together for more than a week.  Thanks in advance for any/all insight.  I've grown up in Las Vegas so I know it will be quite the change!  It's always nice to hear what locals have to say.  Smile

  • Family Circle magazine just did a little blurb on Maple Valley (this month's issue) ...something like the top ten little towns to live in. I don't live there but I do know people that have and liked it there.

  • Maple Valley is awesome. It was just named Top 10 in the country to raise a family by Family Circle. The town is large in square miles but has a small town feel. Most of your retail is in neighboring Covington. It has low crime. There are neighborhoods to meet most budgets. The school district is one of the top in the state. And the scenery is gorgeous with Mt. Rainier as the back drop. There are also quite a few bumpies that live in town and near town. The big con is commute time to the major cities.

  • I live in Maple Valley and love it.  It feels like a small town but is still reasonably close to Seattle, Bellevue and Tacoma.  We have a group on Facebook called the SE King County Bumpies that gets together on the 4th Sunday of each month.  If you want to get to know some folks in the area, you can shoot me an email at jcyahne@yahoo.com and I'll add you to the group.

  • I grew up in maple valley and live close by now. We even consider moving within the Tahoma school district boundaries by the time our kids are in junior high. As a teacher, I think it's an excellent district!

  • Oh wow, that's awesome to know.  I really appreciate your feedback ladies!  I am SO nervous about moving after growing up here but reading the positive feedback really helps.  I believe my husband will be commuting from Southcenter so hopefully it's not TOO bad.  His office is about 30 minutes from us now.  Thanks again for the info!

That would be a good commute, southcenter is less than 30 min from MV =)

  • My husband, 10 month old son, Greyson, and I have recently moved to Maple Valley from New Orleans. It is definitely quite a change!! Very Subburbian but we really like it. All of our neighbors have kids so Greyson already has babies to play with. And everyone seems really nice. My husband commutes to Kent everyday and says the drive isn't bad at all. It does suck that Seattle is far away but our neighbors say it's not bad. Distance is relative here. In New Orleans a 5 minute drive was "long" :) Here everyone is always "it's only 45 minutes away". We're getting use to it but it's a change! Welcome to WA!

Oh yeah, Kent is nothing!  I drive to Seattle from MV every day.  Not a fun commute, I must admit.  Others here can relate, I know.

I think most of the other ladies covered the basics of the area. I also grew up in Maple Valley and went to the Tahoma school district. The area has definitely grown but its still not overly crowded. Covington is just a short drive on the freeway and it has just about everything else you may need that Maple Valley doesnt. Oh and the school district (the high school at least) has some of the best teachers any parent could ask for to teach their kids :)
