Two Under 2

Crib/toddler bed question.

I know I have awhile until I have to worry about this, but what age did you transition your oldest babe to a toddler bed?  Probably for the first month or two, our new LO will sleep in a bassinet in our room, but I'm not sure if my oldest will be ready for a toddler bed then. I'm thinking we will have to buy another crib...WDYT?

Re: Crib/toddler bed question.

  • My DD will be exactly a year old when DS is born..we plan on transitioning her to a toddler bed the week before my due date (so she'll be used to it and not jealous). She already won't sleep in her crib though..she sleeps in her playpen oddly enough. I know that 1 is a bit early for that transition but we're going to put up the side net things so she should be safe.

I say do whatever you feel comfortable doing and give your oldest a little time to get used to the idea before the new LO comes.

  • We're going to keep the new baby in the rock n play until he/she is about 5 months old- which is what we did with J. I'm thinking we'll try a toddler bed when J is around 20 months old (which is when I have spring break and have the time to lose sleep if needed).  If it doesn't work, we'll wait until next June and bring in a PnP if it comes to it.

  • We bought a second convertible crib and turned DS's crib into the toddler bed when he was about 18 months.  We figured that by having two convertible cribs, we won't have to buy any more beds for either child.  DS could climb out of his crib and he was completely ready to go to a toddler bed

We bought a second crib - both of them are still in them.  We will probably transition DS to a toddler bed after the summer, so when he is 2.5.

We didn't decide to buy a new crib until DD was 3 months old, and DS was clearly not ready for a toddler bed.  DD stayed in our room until almost 6 months in her co-sleeper.

    Good luck!

  • We transferred #1 into a toddler bed when she turned 1.  #2 still sleeps in our room but will move to the crib anywhere from 4-8 months.

This is exactly what we're doing!!

  • DD1 is 18 months and is still in her crib. We don't plan to convert it to a toddler bed until she learns to climb out.

As for DD2, she will sleep in the PNP bassinet in our room until she reaches the weight limit of 15 lbs. At that point, we'll move her into DD1's room and into a crib.
