2nd Trimester

Fainting

Today while taking a shower I fainted.  I've never fainted or had any medical problems so the sense of having no control over your body shook me up.  I will be 16 weeks this Wednesday.

Thankfully, my husband was brushing his teeth in the bathroom and I called out to him before I blacked out.  He said I was out only 5-10 seconds.  I got out of the shower, sat on the floor, drank OJ and the feeling passed in a few minutes.

I decided to not go the hospital because I think it must have been from low blood sugar and the heat of the shower?   As soon as I drank the orange juice I felt a lot better.  Of course, I will call the doctor on Monday morning.

Until then, just wondering have any you fainted and what did the doctor say or do to see what caused it?

I'm just very nervous of it happening again if I'm alone.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Fainting

  • From what I've read, this is somewhat common in the second tri.  I think our blood pressure drops, which can cause fainting.  And heat (so your shower or high temps outside) can make it worse.  Maybe try waiting until after breakfast to shower or take a bit of a cooler shower.  Hope you're feeling better!

  • Yikes! Maybe a glass of OJ as soon as you wake up needs to be part of your new morning routine!

  • I would get dizzy at around 14-16 weeks whenever I took a hot shower.  A few times, I had to sit in the tub to get my bearings.  I stick with lukewarm showers at first now and gradually turn up the heat and I haven't had a problem since.  As PP said, I think it has something to do with increased bloodflow making us lightheaded.  Good thing your husband was there!

  • It's common during this time to overheat and sometimes faint.  It usually happens to me after a shower or while I'm cooking.  Just try to take cooler showers and stay hydrated, because you can definitely overheat FAST!

  • Unfortunately I agree with the PPs. Lukewarm showers and morning OJ first thing. Sounds like low blood sugar and heat.

  • I'm not as far along as you but I'll chime in anyway.  I've never had an issue with fainting but I did the other day.  When I talked to my midwife about it she said that she isn't surprised.  My blood pressure is as low as it can be and still be considered normal so she said that any time I'm too hot, too hungry or dehydrated I'll be prone to fainting.  So, you might want to get that checked out.  (In addition to what all pp said.)

  • Could be your BP. it naturally drops in the 2nd trimester, and then goes back up in the 3rd. Make sure you're drinking lots of fluids. The hot shower probably didn't help. Scary feeling!
