How long did you LO wear NB size clothing??

I am a FTM lurking from 3rd tri with a question for you ladies.  How long did your LO one wear newborn size clothing??  And how big were they when they were born??  Did you have to change them often?? I am just trying to get an idea of how much stuff I will need in this size.  Thanks!

Re: How long did you LO wear NB size clothing??

  • My LO was born at 7.5 lbs and wore NB size until he was 6 weeks old.  I was constantly told he was going to be HUGE so I had three sleepers and one pack of onies "in case" he was smaller.  Needless to say, I ended up buying more.

LO usually wore two onies and one sleeper per day due to spit up/poo leaks, etc

  • My son was 7lb 3 oz at birth and he's 4 weeks now. He's still in NB stuff and some of it is still big on him, especially Carter's stuff. He spits up A LOT so he gets changed at least 3 times a day.

  • DD was a preemie but still weighed a decent amount - 6# 7oz.  She wore NB stuff for about 6 weeks.  It does depend on the brand, though.  I found that Carter's stuff runs a lot smaller.  She wore a NB Carter's onesie/dress/cardigan home from the hospital, and never fit into it again.  Other brands run a little larger, but I found that mostly all the NB stuff (regardless of brand) got too short on DD and that's why she couldn't wear it again.

I wouldn't stock up on too many NB clothes, but then again, it's hard to say because I had DD early and ended up needing more NB clothes than I originally thought!  Good luck, it's pretty much a crap shoot!

  • My daughter was 21 inches and 7lbs 3 oz. She went through one to two onesies per day (she is BF and does not usually spit up that much). I'd say she grew out of newborn clothing around a month- but she's very long. 3 month clothes fit her length wise, but not width wise yet.
  • My DD was 6lbs 8oz when she was born. She wore NB clothes until almost 8 weeks!!! I expected a relatively small baby, so I had several NB clothing items... I think I had about 5 actual outfits, plus about 10 onesies and probably 5 sleepers. That was plenty. I was sick of the same ol' stuff after 8 weeks, but buying more wasn't really necessary.

  • My LO was exactly 6lbs when she was born.  She is currently still in nb, but maybe only for a few another week or two.  She lives in onesies during the day (she wore a few outfits when we went out).  You may have to change your LO once a day maybe two.

  • DS was 5 lbs, 15 oz when born. He's now 10 weeks and basically 11 pounds and still fitting into most of his NB stuff. Only the Walmart brand sleepers are too small.

  • LO came out at 6lb 13 oz, dropped to 6lb6oz when we left the hospital.  He wore NB for 3 weeks (10 onesies would have been enough).

He was in 0-3 for 6 weeks (exponential growth here!) and we had SO many outfits he never got to wear. At 9.5 weeks, he's now in 3-6 and it's baggy on him. Also now in size 2 diapers at 13lbs even.

  • 4-5 weeks, she was 8 lbs and 21.5 inches.

  • DD was 6lbs 4oz at birth (She was born at 37 weeks). I didn't have any NB outfits b/c everyone kept saying they would be too small and she would wear them for a week. I had to send DH to Target the day after she was born since all her clothes were too big. She'll be 8 weeks on Sunday and is finally starting to fit into some of her 0-3's.

I would probably have about 10 NB onesies on hand so you don't have to be doing laundry every day.

  • My baby was born at 7lbs 12 oz and 21 in long and he wore NB for just about 2 weeks. In the beginning we didn't have to change him that often because he didn't start spitting up until he was a bit older. We had 5 sets of footie PJs  and 10 onesies/t-shirts and that was plenty. That's all we dressed him in at that age. We didn't do any real clothes until 0-3. He started wearing 3-6 between 7 and 8 weeks.

  • My LO was 5lb 3oz at birth. I moved her up to 0-3 Gerber around the end of June. I ended up having to buy additional onesies and sleepers in NB size and 0-3 size.

If I were you, I would start with two weeks worth of both onesies and sleepers (12-14 of each) and then if you feel you need more after a while, you can always run to the store and grab a pack or two as needed. When I notice that I only have about 3 or 4 left to put on her, I'm reminded it's time for laundry.

DD usually wears 2, either sleepers or onesies, a day - depending on the temp. in the house. I probably change her every 12 hours. I personally have never had a bad spit up yet but I did have two blowouts approximately right before I switched her from NB diapers to 0-3 diapers around 2months old.

  • DS was 8lbs 14.5oz at birth. He wore NB for 2-3 weeks but they were tight. He's now in 3 month clothes at 8 weeks and some of those are tight, but he's 14 lbs and that's the 95%ile.

I would not get much newborn clothes. You can always buy more once LO is here.

  • Mine was 7 lb, 8 oz when he was born.  He was only in NB stuff for a couple weeks. We have a ton of stuff he's never worn.
  • He hasn't even gotten into newborn clothing yet (won't for another 2-3 weeks I'm guessing).  After that I estimate he'll be in them for about 6 weeks.  We have 3 newborn outfits and no sleepers.  Needless to say, I am going to be buying more...

  • LO was a preemie and weighed 5 lbs. 13 oz. at birth, so newborn size clothes were huge on him. Now at almost 6 weeks he can still fit into all his newborn clothes except the sleepers - his legs are too long for those. He'll probably be able to wear his newborn onesies for another few weeks. He goes through probably 2 onesies and 1 sleeper per day.

  • DS was 9lb 10oz, 21" and never fit in NB and was out of 0-3 in about 4 weeks

DD was 8lb 8oz, 19.5" and fit in NB for like a week (Carter's only), but it was tight.  She was out of most 0-3 at about 6 weeks

  • DS was 7lbs 6oz and 21" and I think he work NB size clothing for 6-8 weeks. DD was 7lbs 5oz and 21" and now at 7 weeks tomorrow just went up to 3mo PJs and tops (onesies), but 3mo bottoms are still huge on her (including Gap 0-3mo size), so she is still in NB pants and shorts. With my first, DS, I used to get him dressed every day - in part bc it was something to do, and I probably went through 2 outfits a day about half the week bc of poop explosions (the same goes for PJs,- probably had to change overnight a few times a week). With DD, bc I am so insanely busy with 2 under 2, we go though far less. Until about a week ago, she often only work PJs and was pooping more frequently in smaller amounts so often she wore just 2 pairs of PJs per 24 hours. Now she is on a more normal schedule of getting dressed in the AM, wearing the same thing all day, then 1-2 pairs of PJs per night (I probably have to change her overnight for wetting through, etc 3x/wk).

Uh, never. She was 9lbs and 22 inches at birth. Her length made NB sleepers a no-go. We did use some Miniwear brand NB onesies for a month or so. She also never fit in newborn diapers - she went right to 1's.

  • DS was 20.5inches and 7lbs10oz at birth. He was in NB clothes for about 3 weeks. He's super long so he outgrew the length very fast.

  • DS was 8lb 7 oz, 21 inches long, and he never wore a single NB onesie or diaper.  We only received one size NB outfit, and he was able to wear the pants and little zip up hoodie that came with it, but not the onesie.

He probably went through 2 or 3 outfits a day, plus a sleep sack.

He's 8 weeks old now and wearing mostly size 6 mos things due to length.

  • DS was 8lbs., 19 3/4" and wore nb sized for about a month.

DD was 7lb 6oz, 20", and wore nb for about 6 weeks.  DH put a nb sleeper on her last night, and it still fit, but was def. snug.

both had decent amount of nb clothes.  DS was born in december, so we did outfits and onesies everyday, and then sleepers at night.  DD mainly wears outfits, and sleepers at night, no onesies b/c of the high temps.

  • DS is already over 10 lbs (was 8 at birth) and he can still wear his NB clothes. He also wears his 0-3 month ones, but the NB aren't too tight just yet

  • One day. I squeezed her into it to go home, she weighed 9lbs. 7 oz.

  • My DS will be 6 weeks on Monday and he is still in NB clothing. He was only 5lb, 11oz at birth, though. He is currently about 8.5lbs and 21" long. The clothes still fit and aren't snug yet. We change him once or twice a day...he doesn't leak or spit up too often.

There's no way to really know how much you need b/c you don't know how big your kiddo will be. I'd say start minimally, and you can always get more if needed.

Also keep in mind if you have friends/family coming to visit in the first couple weeks, you might get clothes from them also. We got at least 10 NB onsies just from people visiting and wanting to bring something cute.

DD was 7 lbs 12 oz at birth.  She is still wearing Carter's NB onesies.  As of 2 weeks ago, she could still wear some NB sleepers.  She can't wear sleepers right now because she is in a harness for hip dysplasia. I'm sure she would have outgrown them by now.  It depends on the brand. Within a few days, DD wore a size 3 month dress from Ralph Lauren (runs super small) and a preemie romper from Gymboree. It just depends.
  • Baby was 7 lbs 7 oz at birth, and was in NB for about a month. He is 7 weeks now and his 3 month clothes fit him perfectly so I am guessing he will be outgrowing them soon...eeek! He has only been in 3 months for a couple weeks.

  • Never. LO was 9lbs 9oz and 21 inches long. They never fit her and I ended up giving them to a pg friend. She barely fits in 3 month clothes now!

  • The night we came home from the hospital!! I only washed 2 NB jammies and left the tags on ALL other NB clothes (in bags w/ receipts). Thank God. LO was 9 lbs 10 oz 22 inches at birth. He's just one month now and already in 3-6 month jammies!!!

  • DS was 7 lbs. at birth but was early so he wasn't very fat, just long (MH is over 6 feet tall). He wore preemie clothes for about 2 weeks, then his weight jumped up a pound and a half and he was in NB for the next six. He is now 2 months old and I just packed away the NB and some of the smaller 0-3 month clothes.

  • He can still fit into certian brands of NB clothes but for the most part he doesn't even quite fit in 3m clothes anymore! He was 9lbs at birth and he is just a bit over 12lbs now at 7 weeks.. I change him more often because I want to.. not because he needs it, he just has so many cute outfits I have to get him in before he outgrows them!

  • She is starting to outgrow some of the really small NB stuff but fits fine in 0-3 months right now.

She was 9 lbs 5 oz and 21 inches at birth. She went down to 8 lbs 1 oz and is now just under 10 pounds and almost 23 inches. We also CD, so some of the issue is the extra padding on her butt.

  • My DD was 5 lb 15 oz at birth and can still wear a few NB onesies at 5.5 weeks. Carters were always small on her and were the first onesies she outgrew. Gerber seem to be a bit bigger (0-3 months) and Child of Mine are in the middle. As far as changing her, honestly, why does a newborn need pajamas?!?! We put a onesie on her after her bath and I might not change it until a day or so later. She has never spit up enough to warrant a change and the only time I change during the day is if she spills enough milk while eating (we FF). BTW - we do cloth diapers so her bum is always a bit snug in the onesies because her CDs are a bit big on her still. And because we use CDs, we have yet to have a pee/poop mess on her clothes. When we go out, we put her in dresses and she is still wearing newborn sizes.

  • He never wore NB. He was 9lbs 2oz at birth. At 7 weeks he's 14lbs and in 3-6 month clothing already.

  • My LO was 7lbs 2oz and 20" and wore NB clothes until he was about 5 weeks.  I only had like 3 NB outfits to start with and had to buy more because he would go through like 3 outfits a day.
