I am LIVID! Daycare related

I just noticed that our bottles have slits in the nipples.  I'm assuming this is so they can pour the milk down LO's throat as quickly as possible.  Obviously I'll be talking to them monday but I am so mad about this right now that I will probably be looking for new care.  We aren't planning on giving cereal until closer to 5 or 6 months so that's not the reason for the slits.  Also LO is breastfed except at daycare she's given pumped bottles so there isn't a reason to go up in nipple size either.  This explains why they always mention how much she spits up.  ARGH!!!!!

  • Somebody's head would be rolling, babies can seriously choke that way!

Keep up posted on what happens, I am just as livid for you. If anyone ever did that to DS it would be uuuuugly!

  • That is soooo wrong. i would definately look for new care.  but just to let you know, i was in day care up til i was 3 or 4 and my most vivid memory of it was when i fell on a nail coming out of the carpet and i went for help and they told me to wait while blood was dripping down my leg, i still have the scar on my knee.  there was another time when i remember a lady squishing my cheeks together cause i had done something wrong.  yeah, then my mom stopped working cause it was too much trouble.  I really hope another day care works out better for you.

Why in the world would you tell a story like this right now?  She's already upset about something that happened at DC, but my assumption is that she can't simply quit her job and stay home.  Not everyone appreciates a horror story when it comes to putting their children in others' care.

This exactly. There are plenty of FANTASTIC day cares out there. I don't know what you were trying to accomplish by telling your horror story that is not the norm.

  • Back to the original post....I hope that perhaps you speaking to the director on Monday will open her eyes to a worker who is either unethical and will get fired, or, to a worker who does not know any better (maybe her mom did it or something?) and will learn a very important lesson.  Please let us know what happens!

  • Wow. How horrible. I hope you find a new daycare (and a great one!) soon.

  • Wow. I am just in shock. I would hope that my daycare would feel like we have open enough communication to talk to me about things like that instead of just making decisions about my child behind my back. Definitely keep us updated!

Wow...I would be seriously pissed, too. That's totally crossing the line...allowing a BF'ed baby access to a fast-flow nipple can cause serious problems when the baby goes back to the boob and has to work for milk. I hope you haven't had any of these problems? Even if you haven't, you should tell them that your baby has been rejecting the breast, just to make them see how serious an issue this is. They have no right to make that decision for you.

I have a friend whose daycare called her and asked her if she would switch to a faster slowing nipple, and she said no for the reasons I mentioned - she wanted the baby to work for the milk so that she would still breastfeed well. At least they asked, though! I'm interested to know how they explain this lovely decision of theirs. Good luck tearing into them Monday!

  • OMG I would be FREAKING the eff out on them! There is no reason for that. I don't care how long a feeding takes, that is their job!

    Keep us posted.

wow! I'm shocked--that is so wrong! I wonder if they didn't think you would notice?? I hope you find an awesome new DC. Keep us posted!
  • That is awful!  I had a similar situation.

I put slits in a few of dds nipples, because she has cereal in her formula to help with her reflux.  This bottles are only meant for late afternoon and evening feedings.  Well I notice those bottles kept going missing.  My mother in law (who watches DD in the morning only) was keeping them, because she liked that she could feed DD quickly.  Yet she was upset when DD started spitting up more.

This exactly!!!  Once you've found a new daycare, I would file a complaint with the state department of licensing.  This is unacceptable.

  • sorry , didn't mean to freak everyone out. i guess the point of my story is do you have family that you may feel more comfortable leaving her with?  i would not be able to leave her with someone knowing they did that with my DD

Read my post, and see that family isn't always so great of an option.

I guess not.  I can see that too, i wouldn't want to leave my DD with my MIL cause she has brought up giving water in a bottle to noelle and mentioned giving her cereal at 2 months.  No one knows my DD like i do and I feel no one would care for my baby like i would.  its hard being a working mom, trusting your baby in someone else's hands.

  • Not that it makes the situation better but is there any possible chance they switched your bottles, nipples or part of that with someone else who did slit their nipples?
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • My daycare called and asked if I would pick up a few fast-flow nipples because LO has severe reflux so we have to add cereal to the bottle. Apparently he was getting pissed that the formula wouldn't come out and she was feeling terrible about making him cry. But at least they called and asked if it was ok to slit the nipples for that day until I could get some faster flow ones for the cereal bottles. GL finding someone else who will respect your right to make the decisions for your baby!! BTW -- my daycare lady does keep trying to get me to start him on solids but I just keep telling her I'm not ready to have hims start solids yet. So far, she respects that!

I was actually wondering the same thing...that would maybe make it a little better.

  • Wow- that is horrible!

Landon will start daycare in a month. Oye.
