XP: HBs up 20%

I posted this over on Natural Birth, but thought you ladies may be interested too.

From an article in USA Today:

Home births increased 20 percent from 2004 to 2008, accounting for 28,357 of 4.2 million U.S. births, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released in May.
Pretty interesting! I know I used to think HB was not for me, but I'm considering it for next time.

Re: XP: HBs up 20%

  • We live way too far from a hospital for me to consider a home birth. (in case of emergency it's a 30 minute drive at top speed)

but I had lo at a stand alone birthing center and LOVED it. I never had to go to the hospital, no iv, no meds, nobody except one nurse and the midwife there. It was great and I highly recommend an out of hospital birth.

Unfortunately VBAC @ a birth center is almost impossible in SC. It's illegal for midwives to attend a VBAC unless there is an attending OB. There is on center that is providing that right now, but our state health dept is trying to make attending an out of hospital VBAC illegal now too. There are some midwives that will do HBACs on the down low though. What's really crappy is that I don't have more options, but that's a whole 'nother post. :)

That is crappy. There are two free standing birth centers in our area and one started accepting VBA1C patients earlier this year. I'm crossing my fingers that nothing happens that would cause them to stop offering them before phantom baby comes. You have to be interviewed by them in advance as well. We do have a VBAC friendly hospital in the area but I don't know if I could really ever trust an O.B., in a birth scenario, again.

  • If I have a 3rd I'll probably have a HB.  Kaitlin was born so fast I barely had time to get to the hospital, and we're only 5 minutes away.

Last time I was ALL about the hospital and the epi.  It really sucked for me and I was in pain downstairs for months and months PP.  I'm really really pushing for a HB this time because I want to be in control of my situation; I'm just having a really hard time getting DH on board.

Good news for me is the hospital is literally 2 mins away from my house, so I feel really comfortable.

Oh I'd definitely consider a birth center, but we don't have any in NV :(  I have to choose one extreme or the other.

  • My insurance absolutely won't cover a HB, but I would love to have one. I have no idea how much midwives charge for an uninsured HB, but it would be hard to justify the cost since I was able to labor at home quite comfortably last time until it was time to push DD out.

  • We are too far from a hospital for homebirth to be an option for us.  I think that before I had DD, I was uninformed about homebirths and thought that I would not want one.  I remember laboring in my bathroom and thinking "I don't want to leave my house".  I actually didn't wake DH up for 5+ hours because I didn't want him pressuring me to leave.  I hope to get to the hospital in active labor again and spend as little time in L&D as possible.
