I'm a CD newbie on day 3 of testing out my small-ish stash, which consists of six Flip covers, six stay-dry inserts, six organic inserts, 12 GMD yellow-edge prefolds, and four Blueberry minky OS pockets with bamboo inserts. I did my first load of laundry today and pretty much every single insert that got pooped on has huge yellow stains (thankfully, nothing stained the covers or the Blueberry pocket, just everything that has any kind of absorbancy). It all smells clean, but it looks horrific. Is this normal? I'm using my All Free and Clear detergent for now because I haven't been able to get out and pick up something more CD friendly, but I'd think that would still be able to get things clean, no? I also have a Frigidaire Affinity front-loading HE washer, and I did a "quick" cold cycle first with no soap, then a hot/cold cycle with an extra rinse, which is the closest I could get to a cold rinse, hot wash, and two cold rinses.
Those of you who have been doing this a lot longer, do you get stains like this regularly? And if not, what do you do to avoid them? Any thoughts or advice?
Re: First load of CD laundry - stains on everything?
Dry in the sun.
That's seriously all there is to it.

agree with PP! i asked about stains the other day (i use flips + stay dry inserts) and i had already done the wash and stains remained, so while at my moms i brought all my inserts, got them wet and hung them out - when i pulled them off they were bright white again! (of course the line was dirty so i rewashed everything again, lol)
but yeah, sunning was great!
Stains happen. You didn't do anything wrong, and there's very little you can do to prevent it. Ask me about my daughter's diaper after blueberrie and ricotta...
You either accept the fact that diapers stain (and no one but you will know), or you sun them. Even in a sunny window will help if you can't sun outdoors.
I know most things I've read have said to start with a cold rinse BUT I've always done a hot rinse first and I very rarely have stains. The hot water just seems to blast away DS's EBF poo like it's nothing.
Sunning should get rid of the stains too!
OK, this makes me feel a lot better. I'd read that you could use the sun to bleach out stains, but I didn't really know how much staining I could expect, and it sure seemed like a ton. I'll try sunning some of each kind after the next wash and see how they look. I don't care that much about the way the inserts look as long as the covers stay decent, but I'm sure my not-so-excited-about-cloth mom will be disgusted and will mention it every time she comes over.
Thanks for the advice!
