Recommend your diaper disposal system...

Hi Ladies,

I'm trying to figure out what the best diaper disposal system is. I figured I'd just use the trash but geezus, baby poop stinks! I'm contemplating a diaper genie but read some reviews and it seems to be mixed. We live in a two story house with the nursery upstairs so using the trash can down stairs every time we change a nighttime diaper is highly unlikely. Any advice would be VERY appreciated. I'm at a loss....

Re: Recommend your diaper disposal system...

  • Ugh - the bane of my existence.  Seriously.  I've had two diaper champs - and they're both gone now.  I got one with my son and after about 6 months, it just reeked to high heaven.  I thought I was cleaning/emptying it regularly but apparently not.  I tried the whole "sit it in the sunshine" bit and it never really worked for me. So we stopped using it at 6 months and then I changed most diapers downstairs anyway.

So stupid me, I bought a new one for my daughter and then bought "scented" bags thinking that might help.  And vowed that I'd take it outside at least once a week because THAT had to fix the problem, right?  Um no.  It still stunk.  And not only that - this one stunk worse because you'd rotate the handle and get a whiff of perfumed sh!t.  NOT good.   So for the last 8 months, I've carried diapers downstairs and out of the house EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.

I'm not sure if it's the diaper champ or what but don't buy it.  (I was sold on it because I didn't have to buy the "special bags"....maybe that was my problem).

  • We used the diaper genie elite II when we were doing disposables...though we still use it now since we had so many canister fillings and we just use it as trash now. We loved it, and I promise it works for smell as long as you clean it out regularly (don't let it get over full or the clamps dont close properly).

  • We have a diaper champ, and I don't remember it being too bad during the first few months (I also was attracted to the normal bag feature). I set it outside every so often to air out, and also keep a box of baking soda in the bottom. My MIL gave us a roll of plastic produce bags (she bought them from the grocery store- have to ask a produce person) to wrap the stinky diapers in, that sorta helps. Now I just take the poop diapers right out the the trash outside. Some people say that you're supposed to rinse out the poop diapers even if you're using disposables, that has to be just about impossible with newborn poop. HTH!

  • We have the Diaper Genie II Elite and I've never had a problem with it smelling at all.  You can also get the refills with the "subscribe and save" on amazon for cheaper.

  • The Diaper Champ has worked well for us so far.  I like that you can use 13 gallon trash bags if you want.  I wipe it out every time I change the bag and also have some air fresheners in the bottom and haven't had a problem yet.  It is pretty easy to also take apart and wash out.

  • I have no complaints about the diaper champ.  You can use regular trash bags.  Yes, it stinks when you open it up to change the bag, but other than that it's fine.

  • Thank you for all the info ladies! We ended up finding a diaper champ from CL for six bucks. Its never been used and completely clean. I figure if it doesn't work out, I can spare the six bucks.
