Kidney Stones while Pregnant

Does anyone have any experience with this? My Dad has a strong history of kidney stones, but I've never had one until this week.

To make a very long story short, I was hospitalized twice while out of town in Sacramento this week due to kidney stones (which I didn't find out until the very end) and the pain causing some pre-term labor contractions.

The KS diagnosis hasn't actually been confirmed (since they couldn't xray), but all of my crazy symptoms now make perfect sense.

I passed one on Monday night (fun 4th of July, huh? ;) and one Thursday night/early Friday. I'm terrified of getting another attack. It was active labor pain (though not transition-level pain), but constant for hours. Oy!!!

If you had them, did your doc do or suggest anything? Did you try a stint? If so, was it really painful? Were you told to avoid or add anything to your diet aside from staying well hydrated (which I definitely was)? My follow-up appt is Friday morning.

  • I don't have any advice other than to drink A LOT of water (like 100+ oz).  I'm glad that you're okay now!

  • I just remembered that too much calcium can be a contributing factor, but I think it has to be a LOT of excess calcium. If I remember correctly. I hope your doc can give you some good advice!
  • No ideas either sorry we suck :( But I cant wait to hear what your doc says since they are so good I am sure they will give you perfect advice

  • Again I don't have my own experience just what my DH has been through recently with them. He drinks a lot more water nowadays and there was a list of certain foods that he should stay away from (or at least eat in moderation) like spinach, some nuts and I think chocolate. There is a list out there in Google-land that will have them listed as highest to lowest in range of oxalates, etc.
