AW: Squee! Major hotel score!

I am so excited!  I'm planning a romantic night away for DH on his birthday at the end of July. I budgeted for a room at the W Hotel. A standard, basic room.  When I called to make a reservation, the customer service rep asked if I was a Starwood Preferred guest and did I want to use points for me stay.

I told her that I has an SPG account a couple of years ago but I had forgotten my number and password.  She looked up my account with some other information and then says, "Wow! You have a lot of points. Did you know about these??" 

I had no idea that I had earned almost 40,000 points over the four years I was working!  I told her to just hook us up with the best room available and this is where we'll be staying (with points leftover.  Even cooler? Apparently I'm also a Gold status preferred guest, and if there is room, they will upgrade us to the next size suite!! Yay! Yay! Yay!):

    Thatr's totally awesome!

    You should consider writing an e-mail to Guest Services or the Concierge and let them know that this is a special occasion for you. I worked at the Stephen F. Austin for a year and we always did something special for the guests when we knew something is special to them or at least upgraded them to the next higher room category. I have given away many cheeseplates, bottles of wine and champagne.

    Did you call the W hotel directly? They are closed down right now because all of the falling glass.

    If they are reopened already then congrats on your awesome deal!

    You know, I did and they transferred me to reservations. But when I found out they've been closed (and a few other things that made me change my mind), I ended up booking at the Westin** (still nice and best of all, free). 

    Then I converted the remaining Startwood Points to AAMiles which is great because now I don't have to worry about having the cash to pay for a trip I'm making to DC in December.  So it still all works out beautifully! :)

    **I changed my reservations from the W to the Westin late last night but I didn't want to dd this post.  So this is my update on the sitch.
