Is cream cheese ok?!?

I have been eating a TON of cream cheese lately, its ALL I want to eat. (I'm going to be a house lol)

I had read on a website that it was considered a "safe" cheese but then talking to someone the other day they argued that no its not.

Does anyone have a reliable yes or no as to if this is safe for me to keep eating or not? I don't want to give up my fav new treat but I'm also not willing to put baby at risk. My doctors never gave me a sheet of do's and don'ts and now I'm worrying!

TIA!

Re: Is cream cheese ok?!?

  • It is fine.  It's pasturized. Any cheese that's pasturized is fine. Even brie. Just look at the package but the comercial brands are all pasturized. Worry about the special, imported cheeses. But if they're pasturized, they're fine too.

  • I have been super strict about cold lunch meats, certain soft cheeses, etc., and I am fairly certain that cream cheese is fine as long as it's pasteurized and it hasn't been sitting out for more than 30 minutes.

  • Also, as far as do's and don'ts go, remember, women have been having babies for thousands of years and the species is still thriving.  Just use common sense. Don't worry. The baby is safe. My Dr even said a rare steak won't harm the baby. They just warn against it because if you do get sick, you have a higher risk of getting dehydrated and needing an IV than a non-prego, so you end up in the hospital but even then the chance of harming the baby is slight.  It is greater if you don't get care and then it's the dehydration, not the illness itself, that harms the baby.

  • Thank you ladies! Glad I don't have to give up my cream cheese!! I figured it was ok, but then that other person had me worrying that maybe I had been wrong.

  • Considering I *need* to eat a bagel almost every morning, cream cheese has been fine for me.  I don't see any reason that it wouldn't be...

  • I've heard its not safe, then I also heard its is safe. I say whatever makes you feel comfortable :)

  • I've been eating a lot of cream cheese too- as long as it's pasteurized, it's fine.

  • Yes! Enjoy your cream cheese & soft cheese as long as you can look at the label and see the word "pasturized".

Most stores in the mainland US require cheeses (soft & otherwise) to be pasturized before they can sell them. Unless you get your cheeses from a specialty cheese shop or do raw milk (unpasturized) then you are good to go. Also, with fruit juices watch out for flash pasturized.

    Enjoy!

  • It's alright :) My doctor gave me a list of do's and don't's and cream cheese wasn't in the list of the cheeses, so, I've been eating it a lot on my bagels.

  • "Safe" cheese is pasturized. In general, softer cheeses are unpasterized and hard cheeses are pasterized so if you're eating something unlabeled, you can use this rule of thumb. However, you often times do have access to the label and can read the ingredients for yourself. If it's pasterized, then enjoy!

Some of my prepared raviolis have unpasterized cheese so I'm extra careful when grocery shopping these days. Sometimes I go with mushroom or meat filled ravioli if I can't find a pasterized cheese one.
