Hi from a December Mommy To Be! Car Seat Q

Hi Mommies!

Hope everyone is doing well and loving life with their new LOs!

We are in the daunting process of starting to set up our registry, and car seats puzzle me the most!

Just wondering what you all went with, and now that you are all a couple months in, how do you like what you chose? Anything else you wish you went with?

TIA & All the best......

Re: Hi from a December Mommy To Be! Car Seat Q

  • We picked out the Chicco Keyfit 30. I like it, but I have no idea how I'll carry him when he's actually close to the 30 lb limit. That's really my only complaint. I like the stroller quite a bit, it rides very smoothly!

Hopefully this helps Smile GL to you!

  • I got the Chicco KeyFit 30 and I absolutely love and so does DD.  She is a fussy baby too.

  • this is number 2 for us so it is a mixed set - Graco SafeSeat carrier used with a Baby Trend jogging stroller.  For when she is older (forward facing) we have an Evenflo Triumph.

The Graco carrier was part of DD1's travel system, and has served us well.  I recommend going gender neutral if you plan on having more kids.

  • I would recommend getting the smallest, lightest weight infant seat you can find- that might be the Graco Snugride?  (22 lbs weight limit).  Reason being is that 99% of kids will outgrow their infant seat in height WAY before they reach the 30, 32, or 35 lb weight limit, and who wants to lug around that much weight anyway?!  Trust me, they are heavier than you think or it would seem!

Also, I totally recommend getting a Snap n Go.

For a convertible with have 2 Britax Roundabout 55's- love them.  Again, there are seats that will go to 65 lbs or higher, but the majority of kids will reach those seats' height limits much before they reach the weight limit.

    GL!

  • We have the chicco keyfit 30 in green (like pp said, gender neutral in case we have a boy next).  I like that the bottom is curved and if she's sitting on the floor for a little while, you can rock her in it.

Also, I looked for car seats that had easy access to the belt that loosens/tightens the straps around the baby. This one is right up front, which makes life really easy.

We use this with the Baby Jogger City Mini w/ the Chicco car seat adapter.  We use the car seat/stroller combo all the time, and it's super convenient to just pop the car seat out and snap it into the stroller.  You can also use the Graco Snap N Go for this.  Good luck!

We got the Graco Snugride 35. My son is 11lbs now and I still don't find it heavy. When he gets closer to the limit I'll leave it in the car, like I would with a convertible seat.

We got the full travel system and I like it- I've used it at the mall, on a trail in the woods, and on the sidewalk with no problems.

  • We use the Graco Snugride 35 and a snap and go stroller. It's working well for us. The car seat is pretty heavy with LO in it but that's because the car seat is designed to hold her until she is 35lbs or reaches the height limit. I don't plan to carry the car seat around with her in it when she is 35lbs. I will just carry her or let her walk then. I like the snap and go because it's lightweight and folds up nicely. HTH.

We got a Graco Snugride 35.  It's a little heavier than I'd like, but I love that she'll be in it for so long.  We got the Lowery pattern (half price clearance at Target), and it's a little warm for her.  We live in an area where it doesn't get super hot in the summer, or we'd be in trouble cause it'd be too warm.

  • We use the Chicco Keyfit 30 with the Babytrend Snap n Go. I don't know why all the car seats have such high weight limits. My DS is going to outgrow the the length long before he reaches the weight limit.

It is a little heavy, but I count it as my arm workout. :) And the Snap in Go fits really easily in my car for the times that I don't want to lug the car seat around.

  • We picked the Graco Snugride 30's. Reason: they were one of the safest carseats that could hold babies as little as 4lbs. With twins, we had a feeling they'd be born early (and we were right!), so we needed something we could bring a preemie home in. They've been great so far. They're heavy with the boys in them, but that might have something to do with the fact that the boys are doing very well catching up :) I like that the carseats snap into my Duoglider stroller, they'd also snap into a DSNG (which we opted not to get). No complaints from me!

    Ditto.

I was just at a baby class and one of the other moms had a Baby Trend car seat and she was complaining about the angle of the back of the car seat,  it made her baby sit up too much and the baby's head leaned forward because of the angle. she hated it.  Compared to my chicco car seat, the chicco's angle was much better and my baby loves his seat.

  • we have a britax chaperone for my car and the graco snugride for my husbands. the britax is big and heavy, but i love it.it won't fit in my husbands car (saab). that's why we bought the graco. smaller and lighter.  we went with gender neutral colors as well.

  • Chicco Keyfit 30 all the way.  I've used it for both LO's now and it still looks new.  I like how compact it is.  I wouldn't worry about weight limits and how you are going to carry them when they get that heavy.  DS exceeded the height limit at about 9 months. He's now almost 2 and still not even 30 lbs.  You'll need a convertible carseat within the year.

    This exactly!

  • Graco Safeseat.

I went with it because my brother gave me his used seat for free. Honestly, I don't think it matters that much.

  • We did something similar - Graco Snugride + Snap 'n Go stroller.  For when DD got older we found a Peg Perego stroller on clearance!!

For a convertible carseat (DD is 2yo now), we got a Graco MyRide 65.  I agree with the above post though - she'll be too tall for the carseat before she reaches 65 pounds!

  • We went with the Chicco KeyFit 30 also. And we love it! So does DD.

I only wish the canopy was slightly longer. But we got sunglasses, and they help a lot.. plus they're super cute!

    My overly happy baby girl!

  • We have the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio..My DS loves it and seems so comfy in it, the only complaint, it is SO heavy. 10 Lbs without baby in it, it's getting to the point i can't carry it anymore! Good luck!

  • we have DS1's Graco Snugride carseat from 2007. It's held up great, easy to wash and put back together.

Graco is a very sturdy brand.

man, I doubt it. That's too heavy to carry in a seat. That's the thing about the seats that go up to 30 lbs, you can't carry the baby out in them, so may as well get a convertible (providing the baby has hit the right milestones).
  • with my son, we got the Graco SnugRide 32, as part of a travel system.  I know other complain about them, but I loved my travel system.  And my son was in the infant seat, which I carried all the time until he was 14 months old.

With my daughter, we bought a babytrend infant seat and got a baby trend Sit and Stand to be able to accomodate both kids.  I have no complaints with my babytrend.  The base is much easier to use than the Graco ever was, and I have no angle issues like a pp wrote.

for convertible seats, we have 2 Evenflo Triumphs.  I still need to buy convertible for DD, but have time on that, so I'll wait to see if I can find a sale, or wait until Target's January clearance.

Honestly, buy what you are the most comfortable with!  Def. do a neutral pattern if you plan to have more children, and try out all of the strollers.

based on my experience... make sure that the infant seat you buy will work well in your car.  I had a 2 door honda accord when my son was born, never thought it would be an issue, and the Graco was too large for it...  not a big deal for me since we have 3 cars, but it threw dh and I for a loop when I had to start driving his brand new truck full time. (which I am still driving 2.5 years later)

  • We got the Graco Quattro Tour Reverse travel system: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4389468#viewAllPromos

I love the fact that when it comes time to use the stroller, the seat reverses to have DD facing front or back depending on where we are and what we are doing.  We do a lot of car travel and even though its a bit big & bulky, we like the convenience of the extra storage these types of strollers provide.

I do think DD will outgrow it length wise before weight wise.  We have the Britax convertable 55 for later.

This is the system we have too. I also like travel systems. They ARE big and bulky, but I like the storage, they are easy to me, and really sturdy and long lasting. Our previous one was in fabulous shape even after using the stroller for 5 years and countless airplane trips. Only reason we bought new is the old system expired.

Don't worry about weight limits. Your baby will be too tall for the infant seat before they hit the weight limit. You will likely have to use a RF convertible seat before your baby is a year old, or shortly thereafter.

  • Adding to above, with DD1 we went to a RF Britax Decathlon around 10-12 months. She was RF in that until about 18 months, then I turned her. She is still in that seat and will be for at least another year. After that, she will go into a 5 point harness booster. I refuse to put her in a seatbelt booster until absolutely necessary.

  • We got the Chicco Keyfit 30. I really like it. It's a bit heavy, but I assume almost all infant carseats are. It also fits really well in the middle of the back seat in my Mazda 3, which was a huge concern of mine.

I had a Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP with  DS.  He hated it and it was freaking heavy.  I loved my P3, hated the car seat. With DD, I have a Chicco Keyfit 30.  I FLOVE the Chicco.  I wish I would have gotten it with DS, but I really wanted the P3 and wanted them to match.  I have a City Select now and I love it.
