Artemis?

What do you think of Artemis?

(I loved this name as a kid, it was a favourite book character of mine!)

Edit: For a boy.

  • It reminds me of the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

  • Where I live in Southern Ohio, the Artemis Center is for abused women and children. So I think of that instantly. But I doubt that would carry where you are.

Otherwise I like it for a boy.

  • I like it for a girl, because of the connection to the goddess.

  • For a boy? Sorry, all I think of is the Greek goddess, not Artemis Fowl. NMS.

  • No. Sorry. Too much for me.

  • Artemis Fowl fan, huh? It's a girls name...the goddess of the hunt and the moon, aka Diana. Thanks to the book series I had serious confusion about the name. I think the ART portion of it seems masculine, but I don't know if I would do that. I'm sure there were boys in Greece named in honor of the goddess, but I don't know if they used her name as-is.

  • I never read Artemis Fowl and I just can not see Artemis on a boy.  It's the name of a goddess.  One of my favorite goddesses for that matter.  If I met a little boy named Artemis I would wonder if his parents just didn't understand Greek mythology.

  • There's a small town near where I live called Artemis,PA. The only thing in the town is a restaurant called The Roadkill Cafe. So for me, it's a no.

  • Wait, Artemis Fowl is a male character?  WTF?!  It's the name of a Greek goddess and it's been feminine for like 2500 years.  I don't care how popular Artemis Fowl is, for the love of western civilization please only use it for a girl.

ETA:  I actually really love it *for a girl*.  But not a boy.  I can't emphasize how strongly I feel about that.

It's actually not the first time I've heard it for a boy. There's a famous local revolutionary buried in the Minorcan cemetary named General Artemis Something, there's Artimus from Lynyrd Skynyrd...honest to God, I thought the name was unisex, what with the amount of times I've heard it for both sexes!! Embarrassed

  All I can say is how I feel about it. I haven't ever heard of it as a male name, and considering how strong an influence Greek mythology has always had on western culture, it just seems really bizarre to me, like naming your daughter Zeus or Apollo.  I'm just sayin', I think most people who hear the name will think your DS is a girl, especially if you spell it as Artemis (a lot of the male versions seem to be different spellings and might have different origins).  Or maybe I'm wrong.  I learned about Greek mythology in elementary school, but it's been 25 years and maybe nobody thinks it's important anymore.  (My dad read Greek myths to me at a young age, and I majored in classics, so this is really a passion of mine, if you couldn't tell.)
