I need someones help!

I have a baby in the hospital and had to return my Medela Symphony I had been renting because insurance wouldn't pay for it anymore. I had a prescription for a pump and got it today. Using it for the first time it seems like the motor sucks (is really crappy) and my milk hardly comes out. They gave me a Adavanced Double Personal Breastpump (Medela). I can't find any information about it on the website and I don't know what to do. I feel sick to my stomach because I think this POS is going to affect my milk supply. I need suggestions on what to do... Any help would be appreciated.

I'm in tears because it is taking SO LONG to get any milk out. I can normally pump 4 oz from each side in 20 minutes. I've been going for almost 30 and have not even gotten 2 oz out. I don't know what to do!

Re: I need someones help!

  • Can you pick up a hand pump?  That will help you out until you get this mess figured out.

I would DEF. call medela and ask them for suggestions.  They are supposed to have really good customer service.  What you are describing makes me wonder if there is a leak somewhere.  Did you take apart everything (tubes/valves, etc) and make sure they were tight?  It sounds like you may have gotten a dud of a pump though, and they will probably replace it if you call.

I do have a medela harmony manual breast pump and it works very well for a hand pump.  I've used it a few times for various reasons.  I get about the same as I do with the electric.  I think it was $20 at Target.

I cannot imagine how stressed you are.

This is exactly what I thought, about something not being sealed correctly. Did you change shields?Could they be the wrong size? Medela customer service really is the best. I have had wonderful experiences with them over the 14 months I pumped. I would call without hesitation. They will overnight parts to you at no cost if they need to.

If all else fails can you just rent one for a month from the hospital or a BRU? My hospital had emergency rentals available if your pump stopped working.  Good luck. I hope you find a solution asap.

  • I didnt use that brand (i used Ameda) but also check the valves that attach to the flanges to see if there are tears or rips in them. I always got a lot less milk when they would rip (often didn't notice the rip until I had a real crappy pump). I hope you get it straightened out quickly!

This was going to be my suggestion as well. Also, bring your new pump to the hospital with you and show it to the LCs in your NICU. Ours were great at helping sort out pump issues, maybe they will have some other ideas.

Good luck-I know how stressful that is. Take a deep breath, it will work out.

  • Sometimes your county health department will lend out hospital grade pumps to moms w/babies in the NICU for free. They usually only have two or three but it's worth calling them to see!

  • Oh geez...you have the same welfare pump that I'm on! I'm sorry. It sucks. I hate it so much! Using that nice hospital Medela was the only good thing about NICU! I used a handpump before this one was delivered & have been on this thing ever since. I feel like it's tearing my nipples off some days. Other days I sit here FOREVER pumping as much as I can. It's just a low quality deal - which is why it's free. If I had to do this whole thing over again I would skip a meal or two and rented a pump (actually, I have no idea what it costs!)...but in my dreams that's what I do.
