He'll only eat meat

We introduced meats right before 9 months.  Now if there is meat on his tray he won't eat anything else.  Tonight I made spaghetti and he ate all the ground beef and not one single noodle!

What do you do when your kid finds a favorite food?  I've been holding the meat for last, so now he just won't eat the first 5 minutes until I put the meat on his tray.  I'm thinking that maybe if I just put him on a carnivore diet for a few days it would lose it's "special-ness"

I thought kids weren't suppose to like meat?

  • DD is a big chicken/pork/fish/beef lover too. You should see the way the girl slams a pork chop, it is incredible. She always eats the protein first and then the rest of what is on her plate. We used to make and freeze big batches of meatballs for DD. I would throw in pureed veggies and a little bit of baby oatmeal to hold them together. You could also try a roast w/ veggie cooked in chicken/beef stock because it gives the veggies a similar flavor.

  • Have you tried just giving in to it?  My DD gets obsessed with foods all the time but they lose their luster fast.  She just recently lived almost exclusively off of cherries for 2 days.

From all I've read it's not all that important for them to have a well balanced diet day to day, so long as it all evens out at the end of the week.  As long as the obsessions continue to pass quickly I'm going to pick my battles.

  • Ditto pp's suggestion of mixing in veggies with meat, either with a meatball (probably your best bet), or by making a bolognese-type concoction, although that might be a tad messy at 9 months. I don't think it's a huge deal as long as you're not serving meat 3 times/day for 10 days straight. He's still getting some kind of milk or formula at this age, too, right? I just remember being told that up until about a year, all food is practice, getting used to different flavors and textures. They're still getting all the nutrition they need from formula/bm, so feel free to take a week off from trying to push other foods and try again with the noodles & etc. later.

  • My DS goes through phases too. I've been pretty lax about just letting him eat what he wants (and glad to hear I'm not the only one, since my mom is constantly telling me he needs more food!) I try to get some fruits, veggies, grain and protein in every day, but I'm not always successful. I agree with PPs, most of your LOs nutrition is coming from BM/formula at this age anyway, and I think it's normal for babies to be picky at times.

  • My lo is going through a carb stage right now. All pasta, all the time. A few weeks ago it was days of strawberries. I hope it evens out sometime soon, but I'm not counting on it.
