how long do you let baby fuss in crib before getting him/her?

My two month old will grunt, flail his arms and legs and just generally fuss about in his crib before drifting off to sleep.  As long as he is not crying, is it ok to let him do this?  Sometimes it can go on for over an hour!!  I feel like I am neglecting him - I don't want him to feel abandoned or like no one is paying attention to him.

  • I let her fuss for a couple of minutes to see if she'll go to sleep or back to sleep, but that's it.

  • IMO there is a big difference between fussing and crying. My LO fussed some this mornng bc she is being transitioned from being swaddled (her doings not mine) and i let her lay in her bed a fuss for like 5 minutes, she never once cried though. Now if your LO starts crying then defintly pick them up. Also if my LO were to fuss that long i would probably pick them up anyways!

  • If my LO is fussing but not crying, I'll leave her to settle herself down.  If she "calls me" (she yells a certain way before she starts crying), then I'll go get her, but if she's just making noises but not crying I'll let her do her thing.  I find she'll go to sleep if I let her do that, but if I keep picking her up when she's fussing but not crying, it just keeps her awake longer and she gets fussier.

I usually let her fuss for a few minutes to see if she starts to settle down.  If it continues without stalling or escalates, I go in.  Personally, I feel that if she really needs me, she'll let me know.

  • If she is just making noise I'll leave her. She lets me know when she really needs me. I wouldn't let her full on cry for longer than I needed to. If I'm using the bathroom she may just have to cry for a few minutes and I don't think she's overly traumatized by that.

For sure. Sometimes they just have to cry for a minute in instances like this. We're only human. And humans have to pee.

  • DD goes into the crib still awake, and fusses and moves around a bit - sometimes for up to a half hour, and then she falls asleep.  I leave her be (I have a video monitor).  If she starts doing that whining/coughing noise she does before she starts full out crying, I go and get her, otherwise I let her work it out herself.

Now she also fusses for a while before totally waking up when she is hungry.  In this instance, if I wake up for the fussing I just go and feed her.  I know its in escalation mode...

  • my lo does the same thing.  she'll grunt and squirm for a good while before finally falling into a deep sleep.  if it goes on for more than 10 minutes, i'll usually pick her up and try to burp her.  sometimes that is why she's squirming...she's a really gassy girl!  now if her eyes are open and she's doing this, i will pick her up and try rocking her until she gets sleepy.  if she's crying, i automatically pick her up.  i can't do the whole cio thing...not at this age.

This.  My LO has a "come here" yell, too.  If he's just making noises I leave him alone because half the time he settles himself.

The fact that he isn't actually crying tells me that he's probably just letting off a little steam, but an hour seems like a super long time to just be grunting.. I'd probably go in and try to rock to sleep or something, but you probably know best! Sometimes going in just makes things worse so do what works for you.
