What do you do to combat sleep deprivation?

I used to be such a good sleeper before DS was born and I really miss my 8 hours. I was doing alright getting 5-6 hours a night but now that this 4 month wakefulness thing kicked in, I'm not getting enough sleep at all. In fact, I've been so caught up with not getting enough sleep that I'm actually developing sleep anxiety and am having a tough time falling back asleep after he goes back down. Doc recommended trying to stay up late until my body resets itself so I'm giving that a go but I was just wondering if any of you ladies were having similar issues or had any suggestions. This is the first time in my life I'm experiencing this and it's such a drag. Things are so much harder when you're not getting enough restorative sleep. I need a sleep-cation!

PS. I'm a terrible napper so naps appear to be, at least temporarily, out of the question for me.

Re: What do you do to combat sleep deprivation?

  • Naps are not an option at our house.  Between DS #1 and DS#2, it's rare that they're both actually sleeping at the same time.  We're up between 6 and 7 everyday and there's usually someone always awake until they go to bed that night.  If they do happen to nap at the same time, I usually have too much to do that I can't nap.  But even if I try, I'm just not really a good napper so it never happens anyways.

On days when I'm home (I work PT) I try to always make it a point to shower in the morning, that wakes me up enough that I can make it through lunch time.  #1 then goes down for a nap, so #2 and I just relax.  Then once they're both up from their afternoon nap we get out of the house.  Even if it's just to Target, getting out seems to help a lot.

When DH or I start feeling extra tired, or like we're hitting a wall, we plan for a time where that person can sleep in.  That's the best way we've found to cope with it so far.

My bestie isn't a napper either but with 4 kids (2 sets of twins Surprise ) she would get crazy tired. She would grab a babysitter .. go to the movies ... and SNORE !!! LOL
She says its a great $12 investment for her.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, girls!! I may have to try going out to the movies tomorrow while hubby watches DS... :)
  • Just a suggestion, fresh air has been knocking DS out hardcore at night. He doesn't STTN but I get a good 4-5 hours solid before he wakes up and is up for an hour and a half again. He was up every 45 min-1 hour before I started taking him outside on the porch for a bit, where he'll fall asleep and then we bring him inside.
