Madison Update

I'm typing with one hand while holding my DD !!! I never thought we would get here.  I'm still paranoid about her, I check on her to see if shes breathing all the time.  Shes been doing fantastic ere at home - taking all her bottles with no issues.  Dad and I are exhausted of course but very happy.  Our biggest issue is that she doesnt want to be put down - EVER - she will sleep in her bouncy chair for about an hour or so but thats it - we have not been able to get her to lay down in her crib, the bassinet or the Pack n Play - its frustrating because she can be fast asleep on our chests or in our arms and the moment we put her down she starts to scream! and wont stop until shes picked up again.  We've tried to let her scream it out, to sneak her down, to keep her up so shes exhausted - nothing seems to work.  I've ordered a Fisher Price rock and sleep thingy you guys have all talked about from a friend of ours who is coming over this weekend - I hope it works.  I've had so much trouble keeping up with my pumping schedule between feedings and snuggles - I've seen a definite dip in my supply - I hope its just the lack of sleep and stress and that its temporary.

We also had Madi's first Pedi appointment - it went great - the Doc was really impressed with her!! shes not on any growth charts yet but we expected that - she was a whopping 5lbs 4oz!  The Neo's at the hospital also invited us to to be presented at an ethics conference for all of south Florida where the topic is going to be the ethics of treating 22 week fetuses - most hospitals wont do it.  They want to show off Madison and use her to convince other hospitals that 22 weekers deserve a chance! I hope my little miracle can help save other little miracles!!

Re: Madison Update

  • Oh my gosh, that is so cool! She is definitely inspiring - will you let us know how it goes?

I'm not sure on the other things (I ordered the Rock N Play, too, after all that talk! DH has to put it together soOOOooo we'll see when that happens!)...is she still too little to put in a wrap? I don't believe it, just can't remember what DS weighed when he came hom...it was close to 6, but less I think! The wrap we got was approved and a NICU in Florida uses them for their grower & feeders (babyhawk.com). When DS would have moments like that I just had to let the dishes pile up, hard as that is for me.

  • Glad she is doing so great! I hope the rock and play allows you some "down" time. You are swaddling her, right? If not, try a tight swaddle when you put her down - she probably misses the snuggling feeling of holding her. Have you tried laying her in a boppy? DS napped in one (attended) for a long time. Hang in there!

  • YAY!!!!

I was asking about you the other day.  SOOO happy to hear she is home.

As far as pumping, I pump when I feed Gabe.  So I: go get his bottle, hook myself up (without the tubes attached, just the hands free bra and shields/bottles), get him, sit down, hook up the tubes, turn on the pump, grab him and feed. It's the only way I get any pumping done.  Also, because it was hard to eat I got a bunch of one-handed snacks (string cheese, nuts, granola bars, etc. so I could eat).  I've also heard of ladies putting a basket down where they feed/pump with bottles of water and snack so that they can eat there.

Thanks for the update!!!!  So glad to hear your happy news!

Congrats! I am so glad to hear she is home!

As far as the sleeping thing-my DD was the same way at first. Eventually she learned to sleep on her own for naps and is just now getting to the point where she sleeps in her bassinet during the night (when we are lucky).  I hope the Rock n Play helps--its DD's favorite place to sleep. I think she likes it because the angled walls feel more secure than an open bed so with a tight swaddle and the cradle of the Rock n Play, she feels more safe and can relax. We've also just started laying her with her feet touching the foot of her bassinet and that helps a lot too for the same reason.

  • I'm so glad to hear that she is home and doing well. You know we have the same issue with our DD, who only wanted to sleep on our chest, but never in the pack n play or her bassinet. I would suggest trying to figure out a way to get her to sleep in her pnp or crib, before it's to late. My 21 month still has trouble sleeping through the night, because she wants to be in our bed. Embarrassed

Enjoy your little girl. You have to upload some pictures of Madi.

YEY for being home!!! Your little Madison is definitely an inspiration, and so are you! Reading your post brought me right back to those first few weeks home. We had the same sleep issues for about 2 months after getting home. We tried everything, but LO only wanted to sleep being held. My best advice is to ask for help if you have it available. A few of my aunts took turns coming over to hold our LO so we could actually get some sleep. It was wonderful to have extra arms during those weeks!  ... and remember that you may have a wonderful sleeper in a few months. 3 months after coming home, our LO started sleeping through the night and has been a great sleeper since. Good luck!  Thanks for the update!
