Has anyone on here delivered at Miami Valley Hospital? I've heard horror stories, and i've heard that it's a nice place. So i'm just wondering about it. I havent asked to have a tour or anything yet. Please give me some info!!
I did. I had a fantastic experience. The nurses were great, not at all pushy (I went natural most of the way, ended with c-section b/c DD was stuck). I was in the hospital 5 days after, my care was great, I have no complaints at all. Oh and the food is fabulous as well. If you are at all interested in going natural, look into Family Beginnings. Someone else on here delivered there, I didn't get the chance thanks to my bp. I will deliver there again if I have another LO.
I've said it before, I'll say it again...the food at MVH is AMAZING. I say it's worth it just for the food.
My experience was good. I have nothing to compare it to, and I was not a fan of my OB at the time, but the nurses were beyond wonderful and so, so caring. I only had one bad nurse in my five days there, and only had to deal with her for a couple hours. I never had a problem reaching a nurse for help and felt that the nurses were helpful.
The only issue I had was that I delivered the day before Mother's Day, which happened to be a pretty busy personal holiday at MVH. Because of that, I was not able to see a lactation consultant until well after a day after I delivered, and DD refused to latch. So by the time they got me an LC, we had had to start formula feeding just to give her something. The nurses did try to help me latch her numerous times, and did bring me a pump, but it just wasn't enough.
I will deliver with KHN next time, either at the main Kettering hospital or at Southview, because I switched OBs and my new OB is Kettering-affiliated. Looking back, I wouldn't hesitate to deliver at MVH again (mainly because the food really is that good), but I would make sure to be more outspoken than I was. I probably could have gotten an LC in there to help me if I had thrown a bigger fit, but I was just so tired and done with it.
I'd take the tour beforehand. I liked seeing the rooms and I actually took the tour on a Wednesday and then, a week and a day later, I delivered in the room where they had shown us on the tour .

I delivered Cedric at MVH and am going back for this baby. I love it their and don't want to go anywhere else. I started in Family Beginings, but had to move to regular labor and delivery since my contractions wouldn't start (water had broke 2 days prior). So I got to see and experience both parts. Only good things to say about them from me.

Yeah I have never heard any horror stories. We delivered there and had a great experience. Ditto pretty much everything pp's said. We were slated to delivery at Family Beginnings inside of MVH but unfortunatly it was full so we delivered in (well had a emergency c section) in the regular part of the hospital. I LOVED my nurse. Food was great. LC's were awesome (sorry they weren't available when you need them Erin) All of the classes we took there before delivery were great as well.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
mainly my cousin saying she went there to visit a friend and said it was horrible, reeked of urine, filthy, and the staff were snotty. but some part of me thinks shes making stuff up. shes sometimes the type that will make up stories. but then my other cousin said it was great when his son was born but that was ten years ago.
Thanks for all of the input! I feel a lot better about delivering there now. Now I just need to find out what I need to do to get a tour so my husband wont get lost!

It definitely was not nasty or anything like that. I'll admit that it's not the best area of town, and there were definitely some questionable moms checking out at the same time as me (were taking their babies home on the RTA, were very young, etc.), but the hospital was VERY clean and the security was very high. I am picky about that kind of thing and I have no complaints about the cleanliness, the smell, the sanitary things, etc. I'd deliver at MVH ten times over delivering at Good Sam or Grandview or any of those. Shudder.

Hi! I don't post much, but I thought I'd chime in here. I'm due October 8 (going off your ticker looks like you're right there with me!) and delivering at MVH. Getting a tour is EASY! They're included with the Childbirth Prep class they offer or you can sign up on their website and it's free for the tour.
Here's the calendar that shows the schedules for all the classes/tours:

I have seen what teacherjess saw, some patients that make you shake your head, but I had absolutely no problems with the staff at any time. The lady who checked me in at the front desk was kind of cranky but not towards me, just acted like she'd rather be anywhere but there, but dealing with moms in labor all day/night is probably not the most fun job out there either. Like pp said getting a tour is pretty easy, and the front desk is hard to miss, you go in the main entrance to the Barry Bldg and it's right there.
I delivered at MVH in February. The delivery rooms are spacious and the nurses in delivery were really wonderful to me. The food really is incredible. I've never had such amazing hospital food.
We had D a little after midnight and didn't get transferred to our recovery room until nearly 4am, and then the parade of nurses and doctors started at 6, so I got very little sleep. We had so many nurses and consultants and administrative people in and out of our room that I never got more than an hour or so of sleep at a time for the entirety of our stay. Finally after a nurse popped her head in at 4am and asked if I wanted juice (No, I wanted sleep but I was nursing) we had the staff put a Do Not Disturb note on the door. So a too attentive staff is my top complaint.
My other beef is one of the night nurses in recovery fed me a crap load of misinformation about breastfeeding, leading me to think I wasn't producing enough for my son and telling me my options were to let him be hungry or give him formula. When I spoke to a LC the next day, she was very upset that the nurse had told me that.
Other than that, it was a good experience. Should we deliver there again, I'll be putting that Do Not Disturb sign on the door straight off the bat.

After my first night there, I just had them consolidate their visits to only when I needed meds at night. Made it much easier to get a few stretches of sleep. But at 6am I had blood drawn each day and 7am my OB would do rounds, so no sleeping in.
Hi ladies, hope this thread is still going... I am attending an orientation at MVH Family Beginnings next week to check them out and am encouraged by some of the positive things I've read on this and other posts. I am almost certain I will use them for the birth of my daughter in November. I am hoping for a natural birth with as little intervention as possible and Family Beginnings seems like the only place in the area where that would be even remotely possible.
I was curious if any of you who have delivered there know what the cesaerean rate is for just FB. I've looked and the number I've found is for all materntiy and includes the data from the standard L&D department. Still quite high to my surprise at around 26%. Also, did anyone get the sense that though at a natural birthing center within a hospital, that they were still on hospital timelines in terms of how long to deliver, progress, etc.?
