Baby Names

Vie

A friend just had a baby girl and named her Vie Elayna.  I've never seen the name Vie before and I'm not sure how it's pronounced. Any ideas?

Re: Vie

  • I would pronounce it like the letter, V. Like C'est la vie.

  • or could it be v-eye like violet?

  • I think Vie (pronounced like the letter V) means life in French. Maybe that's why they chose it.

  • Maybe it's pronounced like dye?
  • I'm thinking v-eye. But I could see Vee as well. Let us know if you find out!
  • I would imagine "vee" and I kind of love it, to be honest. I can't imagine it would be "v-eye," since a) vie is a French word and b) "-ie" generally makes the "ee" sound in English.

  • I think of it like pie only with a v sound..

but most three letter words in the English language that end in ie. sound like ''eye' (die, lie, pie,...)... And I think that they went with the phonetic English pronunciation because they spelled out Elayna phonetically instead of spelling it the correct way. They seem to like spelling things out the way they sound, KWIM?

True enough: it's a distinct possibility. I could also see both names chosen for being unique, with no real regard to phonetics.

If it does rhyme with "pie," I still like it, but it's not half as good as "Vee," which is so pretty and means something pretty.

This. Only because I knew an older lady whose name was pronounced V-eye (not sure of the spelling). But I do think the posters suggesting the French "V" have a point.

  • Thanks to everyone for your suggestions about pronunciation!  I did some investigating and my friend did choose the name because of the french word vie and it's meaning. Mystery solved! :)
