Our sitter called me at 4:55 yesterday. The kids were playing with some "magic dough" and within the hour J's eyes were red and watery, nose running like crazy, sneezing non-stop and his cheeks/chin were breaking out and itchy.
(there are products very similar to the "magic dough" that are safe- but this one I'm guessing has wheat. Hence my sitter's confusion. there's no 800 number to call and google hasn't been helpful. we're buying safe playdough to send next week)
She did everything right post-reaction. She dosed him with benedryl and sat next to him until we got there. When I got there she had the second dose of benedryl measured out and ready and the epi pen out of the case and ready to go. Thankfully the benedryl seemed to do enough.
He started wheezing last night when the benedryl wore off and is still itchy. So now we're on 24 hour round of benedryl, albuterol inhaler and a 5 day course of prednisone. We have to call the allergist before they close today with an update to determine if he needs to be seen in the office.
What kills me- he didn't eat the dough. Just played with it. Guess that's one allergy we aren't outgrowing any time soon.
Re: had our first bad reaction in a long time
ugh.. that sucks. i'm sorry
he might have rubbed his face and some went into his eye.. That was my son's first reaction.. he never ate anything but he rubbed his eyes and caused an ana reaction.
i would have never though you have to worry about things they play with.
wheat is in a ton of art supplies for kids. If you google it- there are a lot of blogs that will pop up with lists of "safe" art supplies. Our sitter knew that and generally runs all new art supplies by me first (I told her a long time ago that the brand "play dough" wasn't safe) but J had a new teacher doing arts and crafts and this stuff was in the cabinet. all of the teachers get trained on his food stuff- but if you didn't know it- who would think about allergens in art supplies?!
magdusia- I'm guessing that he rubbed his eyes or put his fingers in his mouth at some point to cause the reaction. Had he just played with it I would have assumed that his skin might break out- but the breathing issues make me think he had to have ingested it somehow.

ETA: this is what we're ordering for the kids to have at daycare. (I have no affiliation with this company- I just like the product.) Some of the profits are donated to allergy/asthma research and prematurity research. Both near and dear to my heart so I'm happy to spend the extra $ to order it for the daycare.

it really is crazy to me that there is wheat in play dough. i got it for my friends son a few months ago and he has celiac -when i found out i called her apologizing like crazy.
magdusia- I'm guessing that he rubbed his eyes or put his fingers in his mouth at some point to cause the reaction. Had he just played with it I would have assumed that his skin might break out- but the breathing issues make me think he had to have ingested it somehow. Maybe he did both.. i don't remember seeing him put his fingers in his mouth (but it takes seconds). it was night time and he was tired and kept rubbing his eyes. my allergist said that you can have an ana reaction when the allergen touches the eyes. His throat did start to close at one point but not until about 15 or 20 minutes after the incident (on our way to the hospital.. i started hearing him wheezing) but his eye lids were 20 times bigger and within 5 minutes he couldn't open one of his eyes.. So you're right, maybe he did put his fingers in his mouth at some point for his breathing to be affected also.. i always just assumed he rubbed his eyes, but wouldnt make sense why he would be wheezing.

i'm actually going to order this for the next time i see my friends son.. i'm sure they'll be pleasantly surprised (and i'll pretend i did my research.) I still cant believe that a famous toy has wheat in it. (just like i cant believe lipstick can contain sesame)
