Moms kicked out for breastfeeding in public

I don?t know why I thought of this but, when you hear stories about moms being kicked out of stores/restaurants/etc for breastfeeding in public, do you think these are moms who are nursing their child without anything covering them up?? Or, do you think that even moms who are covering up with a blanket or some other nursing cover are also asked to leave places? ? I'm wondering how prudish people are in general... Personally, I think it is stupid to kick a mom out for nursing, covered or not.?

  • I agree, people need to get over themselves. "OMG THAT LADY OVER THERE IS FEEDING HER CHILD! IT MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE THAT SHE HAS BREASTS AND IS USING THEM! KICK HER OUT!". It makes me uncomfortable to see people walking around with camel toe, but nobody is kicking Captain Camel Toe out.

  • It seems extra ridiculous to kick out a mom who was actually trying to be discreet. I think its wrong either way though to kick a mom out for breastfeeding in public. I plan on breastfeeding as discreetly as possible when I'm around others (at home is a different story of course) but I'll only go so far to be discreet. If I have to feed the baby in public I"ll use a blanket just because a) i dont need everyone seeing my boob and b) i think its easier for babies to eat when they arent distracted looking around at a million things. While I won't use a gross public bathroom just because breastfeeding makes some people uncomfortable, I also am not going to "flaunt" my right to breastfeed in everyone's face. Hopefully I'll be able to strike a balance.

  • Its not only stupid, it is against the law in most states to kick a breastfeeding mother out of a public place. However, only 28 states currently exempt breastfeeding from public indecency, so know your state's laws, and what you can and can not do when it comes to "covering" . I highly suggest you check out this link:

    https://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14389

"Forty-five states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location"

"Twenty-eight states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws."

I personally do not care how someone breastfeeds in public, if they want to cover up, great. If not, that is fine with me too- IMO. Other's may disagree. Personally, I will be covering up in a public place, but probably not at home or when I am with close family such as my mother or sister.

This. My friend can't get her sixth-month old to focus on feeding unless she puts him under the cover - he'd rather look at the pigeons or dogs or whatever. Of course all babies are different and some hate being under the cover, but I'll be using one just because I'm modest.

  • people really need to get over it.  like a PP said, it's illegal in many states.  I haven't heard of it happening in a while....i think the last place was a Dunkin Donuts or something and the kid who did it was clueless and got in trouble.  if anyone ever tried to tell me to cover up (my kid hated the cover and freaked out when i used it til he was about 5m) i would tell them politely to mind their own business.   if they tried to kick me out, well...then i wouldn't be as polite. :)

  • Sorry if this is a repeat comment, but I didn't see it listed anywhere.  I live in Pittsburgh and this has been all over our news.

  • It all goes back to society turning naturally occuring things into "medical," "gross," "obscene," etc. Birth is 100% normal and natural, but people still say things like "Ew, gross, I don't want to see, I don't want my husband to see." I think the same ignorance goes into breastfeeding in public. For those that argue that with birth blood is involved, I always wonder what they did every time they had a period...

I am a woman, I have periods (when not pregnant), I give birth, I feed my child. I am not ashamed. You shouldn't be either.

    LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't imagine breastfeeding in a public open place without a cover. I am far to modest. If a woman is covered how can it be indecent? If she is NOT covered, well personally I find that to be in poor taste, but I wouldn't say anything, give weird etc. Just not for me.

  • I nurse my 16 month old without a cover in public. I'm not flaunting it, and I don't consider it in poor taste. I consider it feeding my child. We all know what they're for. No one HAS to look or see my boobs. I'm showing less than many people who are just walking around in a low cut top. FYI, nursing without a cover is one of those "I never" statements that you need to beware of saying. I said that once.
