breakfast finger foods

sprout has decided that he no longer wants to be spoon fed.  i usually do either yogurt or oatmeal for breakfast so I'm looking for some suggestions besides egg (he doesn't like it), cheerios/cereal or fruit (he already gets this in addition to yogurt/oatmeal/cereal)

bonus if it's something that i can make/freeze/reheat or otherwise throw together quickly in the morning.

Re: breakfast finger foods

  • DD loves pancakes and I cut them into strips.

Mini waffles and mini bagels were big hits too.

  • C loooves Van's waffles (or any brand, but these are organic and don't have egg). He has one of those with either unsweetened apple sauce or yogurt or cut up fruit every morning. He also likes buttered toast and Cheerio-type cereal (again, with yogurt and/or fruit). Bananas are probably the most common fruit in the morning.

Oh, and the kid adores bacon but we limit that.

  • We've done pancakes, waffles, and muffins (I usually sub applesauce for some of the oil and sugar in a muffin recipe). I've also made banana bread and pumpkin bread. The waffles are frozen ones from TJs or WF, but we make the pancakes or muffins on weekends and freeze the extras in individual portions for later. Then I just defrost whenever I want to give him one.

  • If you make oatmeal in advance (the adult kind) and refrigerate it, you can cut it into finger food squares.  We make healthy mini muffins (little to no sugar, use fruit or veggies in addition to whole grain flours), pancakes, turkey breakfast sausage (either bought or made from ground turkey by me), scrambled eggs, strips of cheese omelet, leftover frittata, whole wheat bread with nut butter and jelly, grilled cheese on wheat, cheese sticks and fruit.
  • mini sausages wrapped in a biscuit/croissant? or just sausage links.

i was thinking an oatmeal based banana/strawberry type bread

    1 cup oatmeal
    2/3 cup nonfat powdered milk
    1/4 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    2 tsp. vanilla
    5 tsp. Splenda/sugar
    4 egg whites
1 pureed banana OR 1/2 cup unswt. applesauce)
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Mix all ingredients together and divide into 3 small loaf pans. *
    3. Spray the pans with Pam first. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes if pans are dark or non-stick. Bake for 30 minutes if glass. This FREEZES well. I baked this at 350 deg. F. for 20 min.

    imageHey Jellisy:

why didn't i think of this?!?  brilliant!

i'll also do some low sugar quick breads....maybe savory & sweet ones to change it up.

  • DD eats either oatmeal or an Eggo Nutrigrain blueberry waffle for breakfast every day. Maybe not the healthiest, but better than the Oreos my mother has been known to give her for breakfast.

mini sausages wrapped in a biscuit/croissant? or just sausage links.

You'd have to be careful with this one - could be a choking hazard.

Another idea - little pieces of cheese with straberries or blueberries?

Or, if he likes yogurt - maybe a frozen gogurt (if they make them in a healthier, lower sugar variety...)

just know that it tastes different than warm soft oatmeal, I personally don't care for it and find the cold pieces very messy

you can also freeze regular yogurt and give it as "ice cream"

but wouldn't i still need to spoon feed him?  he can't feed himself with utensils (we've tried) yet & blatantly refuses *any* food from a spoon.  I've even tried applesauce & yogurt with a little jam swirled in (we give him plain yogurt) & despite these being his favorites, no dice.  He wants to feed himself.

  • Whole Foods carries Yo Baby Yogurt Shakes - we put one in a straw cup and he can drink it while he plays on the floor or rides in the car.  Seriously love those things.

if you can freeze it into cubes or something, maybe you can put it in a mesh feeder?

  • LB is also big on cereal bars - at that age I would break them up in small pieces and give them to him.  I think the Earth's Best ones are pretty low in sugar?

I want your mom to fix me breakfast!  Stick out tongue

Another bumpie I know finds the yogurt baby shakes and serves 'em up in a straw sippy. DS didn't quite know what to do with it when she shared a shake but it eventually became a hit.  (not finger food, but alternative)

I'm gleaning a lot of ideas here!

eta that she also posted this! Stick out tongue

I did this for myself recently with some yogurt and fresh blueberries in it - OMG it tastes amazing.  Just put it in the freezer for a little while though (like an hour and a half) or else it's too hard to eat.  Again, AMAZING
