Prepaying for birth?

I called my hospital to pre-register and setup my anesthesia apt. They quoted me the hosptial fee I would be responsible for and they prefer to have it before I am admitted or before being discharged after deliver. That didn't include any drugs. I got another quote for anesthesia but was told it's billed by time. This is crazy. Can't they just bill you everything afterwards? Is anyone else prepaying what they can before LO comes? I don't have all this cash laying around and we are trying to pay off other debt before LO is here. I guess that's what everyone means when they say babies are expensive. Surprise

Re: Prepaying for birth?

  • they can't really force you.  just ask to be put on a payment plan.  but yes, it's standard for them to try to get the money upfront.

  • I think that's some BS.  I would just tell them to send you the bill.  The only thing I have to pre-pay for is the birthing tub and the doula service.

  • Interesting - the only thing that the paperwork said I'd have to pre-pay is my insurance copay, which I'd pay at this point anyway since if I go into labor at this point I'd have to go to the hospital anyway. I asked my insurance company if there were extra costs associated with that, and they said no, but I guess I should call the hospital!

  • We are using a birth center and are required to pay everything in full 30 days prior to my due date, I just made our final payment this week. Feels good to get that out of the way. I would think at a hospital you would pay everything AFTER the fact....

  • Because babies are known for their predictability and you're guaranteed to know you'll be delivering there, and they can definitely say how it's going to go down. What happens if you go into labor and have to go to another hospital?

I hope I don't run into this problem with ours when we pre-register, but happy to have the heads up.

  • Hmmmm, notice they said prefer, not require.  Don't pay that stuff until after!
