Success after IF

Due soon...should I be reading any sleep books or any other books?

I like to try to be prepared. I know a lot of people feel that you will just know what to do with a baby, but I like to feel prepared I guess.

I have read some books about labor & delivery, and I read Baby 411 cover to cover. I haven't read any sleep books.

Any advice at all is appreciated!!! (I am not breast-feeding so I do not need recommendation on those books.)?

  • Happiest Baby on the Block!! I ordered the DVD from Amazon and found it to be incredibly helpful! I also LOVE The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. It is my baby bible and I am always referring to it.

  • Ditto Happiest Baby on the Block. we followed that and The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and the EASY method starting at 2 months. And I swear it's what made J such a good sleeper/eater..

Other books I got after he was born was

The Baby Book by Sears&Sears (this is very pro co-sleeping baby wearing ect) it's not really my thing but they have some good tips about sickness and colic!

Touchpoints by Brazelton..This is a very good general baby book!

What to expect the 1st year..is also very good..

  • Honestly, I wouldn't bother reading sleep books quite yet, unless you would just prefer to read them now instead of in a couple of months.  Your LO is just going to do his/her own thing for the first while when it comes to sleeping/ eating, etc. ;)

The best thing we did before DS arrived was watch the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD.  It's short - probably only 20 minutes - but was absolutely invaluable, especially for DH.  Since I read books myself, it was great to have a source of information that we could share.  We even went back and re-watched a few portions in the first few weeks he was here.

    GL!

eta:  I have never read a sleep book.  I started reading one or two and was just bored out of my skull - and they're so long!  I picked up a few ideas about what to expect from this board, and we just followed DS's lead and worked out our own thing.  Now, if he had major problems or something, I might read one, but otherwise, I didn't find it necessary.

  • The 90-minute sleep solution - basically goes through the sleep cycles so you can more easily predict the best times to put LO down, etc.  DD was not very good about giving sleep signals and didn't have a good schedule for a long time because we would miss her sleepy window.  That book would have helped a lot.

  • I'd highly recommend Secret of the Baby Whisperer.  I think it's a good book to read before the baby arrives so you already have a plan in mind!  I think it REALLY helped me to think about a routine before the baby arrived and gave lots of good information.  I referred back to it quite a bit after he was born. I was trying to get him on a schedule very soon after he was born.  I, also, did not BF and her EASY routine seemed a good fit for FF.  Good luck!  I'm going to reread it before #2 arrives so I'm ready again!

Ditto this - I put both DS and DD on the EASY routine right when they came home from the hospital.  I really think it helped all of us to have a predictable schedule to follow!  (And I did BF - she does have lots of helpful information about BFing and FFing with her routine).

We never actually read Happiest Baby on the Block, but I have heard it is fabulous - they also have a DVD so you can watch rather than read...we are working our way through the Happiest Toddler on the Block now Smile
