Super-advanced baby?

So DD is 5 weeks old as of today, but I swear she thinks she 5 months. She's been able to hold up her own head since she was only a few days old, but now she can hold it up for 30 seconds unassisted. She can also do a pushup, though she can only manage 2-3 of them at the moment. We discovered today that she's already making crawling motions, and to our surprise, can scoot around a wee bit. I didn't think babies could do this so young! I didn't expect her to be capable of doing any of these until she was a bit older. She's always been a rather strong baby, but this just seems super advanced for her age.

Is this normal? Anyone else have a LO that wants to be mobile ASAP?

My LO has been able to pick his head up for short periods of time since a few days in and when we do tummy time (on my tummy), he does crawling motions and can scoot around a bit as well. I think most babies probably do these things but don't "master" them until later.

She's "always been" a strong baby? Lol. She's a newborn.

Sounds like she's interested in moving around. Have fun with her, but don't worry about whether she's "super advanced" at a month old.

I've never been around a newborn before, so all of this is totally new to me. I honestly expected her to just be a little lump of cute until she was at least 3 months before she'd start doing some of these things. LOL

Mine has done all these things as well and has for a while now, many of them even while we were still in the hospital. She also has been wanting to stand up(balanced by us) for a while too. If she is in your lap, she pushes up with her feet and insists on standing.

I don't know that this stuff is advanced. I would say that babies that haven't started doing these things most likely have started to do thing that our LO haven't started doing. I would not be so focused on her being "advanced." They are babies and, in the long run, a head start on making crawling motions doesn't make one bit of difference. It's not like this means our kids are on their way to becoming stellar athletes or super smart. There will be plenty of time for excellence later in life.

DS1 did all of those things, and he started rolling from tummy to back at 4 weeks. I was convinced he was going to hit all the physical milestones super early, but guess what - he didn't crawl until 10 months and didn't walk until 14 months! So, you just never know.

My DD is the same way. I have nothing to compare her to so never thought it was "advanced". Everyone who sees her though is amazed.

My DS was the opposite, he didn't roll over until 4 months, was crawling and cruising at 6 months, and was walking and running by 10 months. When they start be mobile really doesn't mean anything other than your life gets a bit harder!

My baby did a push up the first time he was set on my chest and I've never really had to hold his head for him. He is very strong and while I've very greatful for that, I don't think he is going to grow up to be the next Doogie Howser.

My mom gave me some great advice: your LO could start walking super early but then start talking months after most babies. There really isn't a "super advanced" newborn; just enjoy things for what they are and wait a few years before you start comparing your LO.

I'm sorry, but she isn't.

I'm glad you think she is, though. It's nice to get affirmation from our kids. My 2 yr old can barely say his "L"s. So I think you have a "few" months to go.

Sorry OP but what you're describing sounds pretty normal and not necessarily an indicator of how your baby will develop in the future.

This is DS exactly. We had pro photos taken when he was 4 weeks and in one it looks like he is crawling and people ask what angle the shot was taken because they don't believe he was doing it on his own.

I think some babies are just stronger in the beginning than others but it doesn't make them more advanced.

My theory is that both DH and I have really good muscle tone and DS has inherited it.

DS has been able to do these things since a few days old also. While in NICU, just hours after he was born, he managed to pull out his feeding tube, escape his swaddle, and roll to his side. I think it's pretty normal for babies to move around quite a bit. Now if the movement seemed intentional or with purpose it might be considered advanced but most of it's just flailing around and they accidently do something that we recognize as crawling, push ups, ect.

DD has been lifting her head since the day she was born! She's 6 weeks now, and she has been doing "mini push-ups" for a couple of weeks now.

My BIL started crawling at 3 months. It's rare, but babies can hit milestones a lot earlier than average (and it's totally normal)!

This is a primitive reflex and is not indicating she wants to stand on her own.

This is a primitive reflex and is not indicating she wants to stand on her own.

I didn't mean that it ment that. I just ment that they all do things that seem to indicate that they may be moving to the next step, but that it doesn't always mean much. I was trying to give an example, but now that I go back and read it, I wasn't being very clear.

I think we all believe our children are 'super-advanced'. DS could hold his head up from the moment he was born- they put him on my chest and he looked up at me. He also started rolling from his stomach to his back at 3 weeks.
