Thick Nuchal Fold :(

I went in to see my GP to review the results from my A/S done last week at 20 wks. She told me that they measured the nuchal fold - which came back as abnormal (7.1mm) and that I'll be referred to an OBGYN for further consultation etc. Needless to say I'm not sure what to think and freaking out slightly as I've been doing some research. Nuchal thickness generally isn't measured at this stage in pregnancy - often only from 11-14wks - because that is the most accurate time frame... I know that normally they don't measure the NF during the A/S (my tech was training someone else so they measured everything). I'm sure I'm rambling right now - and apologize if I don't make any sense... I'm 28, healthy and neither my husband or I have any health concerns as far as chromosomal abnormalities as far as I know. Everything else on my A/S came back as normal.. I'm so confused and probably wont see an OBGYN for a few weeks. Has anyone had this happen? Any advice or info that you can share would be so appreciated!

  • Why are you seeing a GP for pre natal care?

  • I'm in Canada and have been seeing my family doctor (small town). They often don't refer to OBGYN's until after the A/S.

  • Well I certainly understand why you are concerned!  I am assuming they did not measure the Nuchal Fold at 11-14 wks for you?  If you don't have a regular OB and needed a referral, when you call to schedule the appointment tell them that you need to be seen as soon as possible to discuss the results of a genetic test.  They should be able to fit you in in a day or two - not a few weeks.

Try not to let the internet scare you either - I know it's hard.

They may recommend you get an amnio for certainty on any diagnosis.  Just breathe.....

    Oh wow that's strange.

I had to go to a perinatologist because of blood work done during the 1st tri ultrasound. The nuchal folds came back normal, however my blood work had markers for Down Syndrome.

After a long discussion with my OB's nurse, she told me that she has seen thick nuchal folds and perfect blood work, bad blood work and perfect nuchal folds, and bad blood work and thick nuchal folds, and all of those babies were born perfectly healthy.

I had an amnio done for piece of mine and it came back normal. You are passed the time to do an amnio though, so I would go to an OB and see what they say, they may even refer you to a specialist for a level 2 u/s. I wouldn't worry too much, but do get in with an OB asap and let them know it's regarding genetic concerns from your GP.

  • It's my understanding that the reason they are *so* strict about only measuring the nuchal fold at NT scans between 11w and 13w, 6d is because after that it is a virtual crapshoot as to what happens with the measurement. I'm no expert, but try to take this info from them with a grain of salt. I had a very extensive a/s at 20 weeks and they did not even look at the nuchal fold on mine.

    That's an odd one.

I didn't have that, but am going through something similar with echogenic bowel - which can and often is completely normal, but might be an indicator of Down's, CF or an infection. They referred me to perinatology/genetics, but the cost is so much, and there's nothing you can do about the first two, and can test for an infection other ways, so I think I will skip it!

Hope you are able to talk with an OB soon and get some clarification / peace of mind!

  • I'm in Ontario and also living in a small town (using a midwife) My nuchal measurement was normal but my bloodwork came back with a 1:25 chance of DS. We were referred to London Health Sciences the very next morning for an amnio and our results showed NO abnormalities.

I hope your OB can look at your results soon and refer you to a genetics specialist if need be. Also please keep in mind that nuchal measurements and blood tests are not conclusive and often give false positives!

  • Sending healthy baby juju.

One the nuchal fold measurement, maybe it's because I'm of "advanced maternal age", but they measured LO's nuchal fold at my a/s yesterday.  I guess I'm surprised to hear that they normally don't measure it in an a/s.

  • Try not to worry and stay calm. I had my NT scan done at 13 weeks and at my A/S they measured the nuchal fold again. However, my doctor (high risk OBGYN) was the one who did the ultrasound and took all the measurments. Especially if a tech is doing the measurement, at 20 weeks, it could be inaccurate. Try not to stress and I would follow up with a perinatologist for a repeat scan to be sure everything is okay with the baby. They are the specialist in any fetal abnormalities.

  • TY for all of the advice, T & P's! We can't get in to see this OBGYN for another 2 weeks - eventhough they know our situation. My referring GP is on holidays as of today... so we're stuck playing the waiting game. :( But regardless of the outcome, this baby is a precious gift to us and we will love him all the same.
