NBR: When did I become un-cool?!

Okay so the other day I'm watching my friends little brothers video on YouTube of when he was at a party. The person went around filming and whenever someone was filmed they would bust out and do the Dougie dance. Okay. So I guess every single person under about 19 knows how to do this dance because ALL of them did it when the camera went to them? Is it like the new macarena or what. haha

Then just now at the grocery store the cute little bagger boy says "MAAM can I help you out, you look like you have your hands full?" Yep, Maam. lol. The register girl called me Maam also.

Thirdly, "planking". WTF. When did it miss this. Why is everyone posting pictures  of themsleves on FB balancing flat on things and whats the dang point? I' lost.

So yeah. I feel sorta old. I've been married for almost three years, have a baby and a house. When did this happen??! Last night I was telling DH "so apparently every highschool kid knows this Dougie dance and he replies "oh yeah?" haha.

Re: NBR: When did I become un-cool?!

  • So, I'm 27 next month, not sure how old you are but just to compare...

My 17 year old sister said something about "Dougie dance" one day and I had no idea what she was talking about. She was like "Come on. Seriously? You don't know?" (Apparently I should??)

I get called "ma'am" and it drives me crazy. I am NOT a "ma'am!"

And planking...hadn't heard of it until I saw Rosario Dawson do it on Chelsea Lately yesterday. I don't get the point either.

  • Haha yes, but have you been "mall walking" yet? Last night DH and I saw "planking" on tv and we were like WTF? We seriously said the same thing about getting old like you did.
  • I never heard of planking until today when someone posted this video.

    Cone-ing is the new planking

I still don't know what planking actually is though. Off to google that and the Dougie dance.

  • I have heard of this Dougie dance but never seen it and I have never heard of planking before so I am not cool either. I rarely get ma'amed because I am 25 and look like I am 12.

  • ha ha! I know what the Dougie is because I have a 10 year old DD and I keep up with all the hip stuff through her. Plus in Bruno Mars Lazy song, he says he is gonna watch MTV so they can teach him how to Dougie. So I looked it up. LOL

The planking thing is ridiculous though. I heard about it on the news a few weeks ago because some idiots got fired from their jobs doing it by balancing on some telephone poles.

As far as the ma'am things goes, I am from Alabama where everyone uses ma'am and sir... but I always tell the "youngsters" I am not really that much older than you. ha ha...

  • Wow, I'm super uncool then because I have no clue what either of those things are. Other than being called ma'am.

I've known I was uncool for a long time. I like to go to bed before 10:00 on both Friday and Saturday nights.

    I'm 26 also.

  • I knew what the Dougie was only because I saw a video on vh1 or something on how it originated because of Doug E Fresh....not even sure if I am spelling his name right but thats what they called him. Not even sure who HE is though. I think he is from the 80's? I bet it a teenager read this paragraph I just wrote they might laugh. DH and I ended looking it up on youtube though.

Oh oh oh and last night I noticed one of the So You Think You Can Dance guys did a Dougie move a few times. At least I caught that! lol

  • haha I'm 27 and still had no idea what these were I just had to google both

  • apparently my best friends Father is cool....lol.

Note: he is a really funny guy and was definitely doing this as a joke. He is super calm and thinks he is too cool so that makes it a million times more funny!

  • I hear you. I went from being carded when I order a frou frou drink to getting a cart at Target handed to me by a teenage boy saying "here you go ma'am." This happened at my last trimester. Maybe being so big then made me look a lot older.

I did know about the planking though. Saw it on the news. lol

    But the dance, I didn't.

Yep....my cousin (21 years old) also said I am now uncool and she doesn't think we can hang anymore like we used to. WTH? lol On the upside, she said she'll babysit for me this summer anytime.

  • I've only heard of the dougie dance from that song- I don't know what it looks like.

I've never heard of planking until I read this post.

I was raised to call every lady "ma'am" but I know some people don't like it- it doesn't make me feel old though.  Good thing since when I'm on base I get called ma'am everywhere I go.

And I know I've been uncool for some time- when I was still working I was a manager at TRU/ BRU and worked with a lot of teenagers and college students and I realized just how out of the loop I was- lol!

  • I'm 24 and have no clue what any of that is!  I think I'm almost elderly!  I feel so far removed from "kids" today.  I hardly listen to pop radio stations anymore.  I was talking to one of my school's secretary's 13 year old (whom I tutor before school starts), and some how we got on the topic of Justin Beiber (sp?).  I told her when I was 13 I plastered my walls w/NSYNC posters.  I had so many you couldn't see the paint on the wall.  She looked at me w/this glazed over look, like who are they?  When I asked her if she knew who Justin Timberlake was, she had no clue.  Today I had an old lady moment when I saw 3 maybe 13 year old girls while driving w/MIL.  I told her I was so glad I didn't have a daughter, b/c I'd kill her if she tried to leave the house in booty shorts, esp as a preteen!  I literally said "I have underwear bigger than their shorts" LOL

  • And I have to add after googling "What is planking" that it seems like a big "F U" to pregnant ladies who can't lay on their stomachs and would love to do some "planking" in a nice cushy bed!  I'm not a stomach sleeper but with all the posts about it during our pregnancies and even now about how it's sorely missed, that was the first thing I thought of!

yes!  At lunch the other day I saw some 15ish year olds in coochie cutters and told DH I was so glad I don't wear those anymore because they were so darn uncomfortable!!

  • Personally I dont feel uncool when I find out there is a new group dance thing out there (I'm from a small town and we're always the last to know anyway....I'll learn them before the next wedding though!).

I felt uncool when all my single, child free friends treat me like I've fallen off the face of the earth because I got married and have 2 babies!  I mean I'm only 25...I could totally leave the boys with DH and go out for a girls night....and love every minute of it.  Unfortunatly I don't have any friends who think this is still a possibility for me :(

I really need to make some married with kids friends!  All my old friends make me feel so old.  And when they do call and want to go out they always turn me into the designated driver...

all of this is more reason for yoy NOT to be the DD. You have to savor your out time. They get it more often. It's harder for Mommas to break away!

  • DH and I went out for drinks a couple nights ago, and instead of immediately asking for my ID, it was almost an after thought. Way to make me feel old.  People used to ask if I was even old enough to sit at the bar, now it's like "oh, yeah, I should probably see an ID" Sad

Got called ma'am for the first time while leaving a restaurant two days ago.  I whined to DH the whole way home about how terribly old I feel... at 22. lol.

  • I first heard about the Dougie from a story on npr a few months ago, which I think makes me approximately 78 years old. Michelle Obama knows how to Dougie...she's a hip lady! I bet her kids taught her.

MH posted a picture of LO "planking" on fb yesterday. No, we didn't balance her on anything, it was just a picture of her doing tummy time, haha. I only know what planking is b/c someone in Europe (i think) died from a fall while planking on a hotel balcony.

I don't mind getting ma'am'd. But I live in Georgia, where kids are taught to call everyone except other kids "ma'am" and "sir."

  • I turn 30 in a week, and have no idea what the Dougie dance or planking are.  I feel old AND uncool.  :)

To the pp whose single friends don't invite her out anymore, that makes me so sad! My 30th birthday party is going to be a night out on the town, and ALL of the attendees are married-with-children women (with one possible exception - a single coworker of mine), and we're all VERY much going to enjoy a night out without our DHs and LOs (much as we love them)!  As April said, we savor nights out more than single folks!

  • At 38, I am familiar with all of this...doesn't mean I can do it.  No one can "teach me how to Dougie" because I just flat out cannot dance.  At all.  But we are surrounding by friends that refuse to grow up and those that have grown up have kids around the age that makes us privy to all of this.
